"They , have made no

He said that: the only land
purchased in the past year is
a one or two-acreplot near

He went on to say that any

A reader'is encguntering difficulty renting an apartment due to
the fact that she has 3 children, a dog and a budgie bird. Her
letter of complaint to us is directed against Apartment Finding
Agencies.
She claims that all. she got for her money was a number of
apartment listing books to browse through, supposedly having
listings of accommodations suitable to her particular:.
requirements. She goes on to tell us, that in her case anyplace
that she investigated that did accept children and pets wanted a
very high rent, away over what she told the agency she could
afford.
The agency gets their fee in advance, and the client has to sign
a receipt which includes small print, in effect legally freeing the
agency of any responsibility of actually guaranteeing to find
accommodation for their client:
The firm claims that the service they offer is valid for 3
months and usually results in getting a satisfied customer.
We understand that recently the Ontario ,Ministry of Con-
sumer and Commercial Relations in Toronto • have been con-
ducting an investigation against this type of business, and that
legally they cannot be denied the right to advertise; however, it
was suggested that the larger newspapers publish all ad-
''vertisements of this nature under a separate heading in their
classified section, clearly showing them to be separate from
actual "on the source" accommodation listings.

Can you tell me please who qualifies to receive compensation
as a direct result of a crime, and how does one go about
collecting same. Also do I have to have a lawyer?
Compensation may be awarded when a person in Ontario is
inju'red or killed as a result of a crime of violence that is an of-
fence against the Criminal Code of Canada. Such offences in-
clude assault, wounding, murder, rape and various others but
injury caused by a motor vehicle is excluded from the Act unless
the vehicle is used to commit an assault.
Compensation may also be awarded where injury is sustained
while
'—lawfully arresting or attempting to arrest a person for an
offence against another pe -son.
—assisting a law-enforcement officer in the performance of his
duties; or '
—preventing, or attempting to prevent an offenceagainst
another person.
Applications must be made within one year of the injury or
death. In special circumstances, however, this period may be
extended. It is in the best interests of the applicant to apply as
soon as possible Do not wait for a conviction or other deter-
Mination of the criminal charge by the courts.
You do NOT require the services of a lawyer, make your own
enquiries to the CRIMINAL INJURIES COMPENSATION
