I have been a resident of Goderich for the past 40 years and have been in business for 23 years. ' I have also served 12 years in all capacities of the Goderich Public Utilities Commission which I feelis valuable experience. Do you, as a candidate, feel you have the time necessary to attend all meetings of the Public Utilities Commission and to be in attendance during the .whole of 'those meetings? .. Goderich 'which means so much to me. • Being in direct contact•with the citizens', I feel I can contribute ideas to • the operationof the Public Utilities. I do think that old- fashioned common sense is essential in dealing with the matters of Utility business. Do you, as a candidate, feel you have the time necessary 'to attend all meetings of the Public Utilities Commission and to be in attendance during, the whole of those , meetings ?0 • I have served as a Com- missioner for the 'past 'four. years, and. during this period I have not missedone regular or special meeting, and, of, course, was .present for the entire meeting. . .If: elected I would plan to attend all •the . meetings, as well as, being .available for' any emergency meetings or problems that might develop during the day. • Utilities Commission have the expertise , necessary • to provide the installation of. servicing to modern business and industry? • We have' the expertise necessary to install services • to modern business and .in- dustry. We are also interested in updating services in the older homes to accomfriodate the needs of modern-day living, ' as well as the safety •factor. I feel that the Public UtilitiesCommission serves a definite purpose. • It takes some of the work load from the Town Council; however, we work very closely with the Town Council and ,pur Mayor. sits ,in on all meetings. What motivates you to seek election to.. the Goderich Public Utilities Commission? I have always been : in- terested in local politics and follow it with great interest. For the past 12 years, I have tried to work with other members on the Board harmoniously as well as council, and the Public's interests are always at heart. Mese are very trying times for people who have to live on fixed incomes and i I am deeply interested in what we can do to make Goderich a better place in which to live. Does the local .Public Utilities Commission .• have. the expertise necessary • to provide the installation of servicing to' modern business and industry? I believe: that our, em- ployees and Manager do have the expertise necessary to provide servicesto modern. business and industry. They have the qualifications to work and maintain high voltage lines in Goderich, as well . as erect our own sub- stations within the municipality. Our four senior employees, have -a total of over 90 years• experience in ,electrical work. During the severe ice storm last winter in Exeter, our employees helped' . to .res G service and did receiv letter from: the Mayo Exeter commending them on •the' excellent work performed there. tore e a r of they Last year we were told that with heavy demand over the” Christmas period Goderich might face `brown outs'. Can the Goderich Public Utilities Commission supply the power necessary for new industry: locally, such as Borg War- ner? The • Goderich Public Utilities ----Com mission- -can — supply all the' power necessary for new Industry --locating in Industrial Park or, anywhere else. in Goderich for years td- come. Any `brown outs' -experienced i'h the future will be as a result of severe demand on Ontario Hydro's power reserves for all of Ontario: Are Public Utility Com- missions necessary or could the affairs of public. -utilities be conducted as well, and with better communication, by a standing committee of Town Council? .., I do think that the Public Utilities Commission serves a definite purpose. Many. citizens do not have sufficient .time available to serve on ' Town Council, and welcome the opportunity to serve as Commissioners in the Utilities. I do think that in the near f'uttire° - the utilities will be absorbed . by Regional Government. What motivates you to seek. election • to the Goderich Puhlie-Utilities Commission? I have always followed local politic_ s` with great -in- terest and, have very much enjoyed worming with. the. local Public Utility Com- mission. With my nine years service on Council, four. of those • years as Mayor, and six years as a Commissioner', I believe I have the. experience to help govern the Utilities over the next two years: I have. also been a member' of the Industrial Commission for six .•years„so I am not a,stranger to the needs of industry. In addition, having -been in the. plumbing business all my life, I have an insight into the Water Utilities, its needs and problems. • 'Do you, as a candidate, feel you have the time necessary to attend -all meetings of the Public Utilities Commission and to be in- attendance during the whole of those meetings?. During 1975 there were fourteen meetings called for the Public Utilities • Com- mission, Town of Goderich, including two special meetings. I attended all the meetings with the exception of one.special meeting. To date in 1976, including November's regular meeting, fifteen meetings have been called, including three. special meetings. I have attended all the: meetings. Does • the local Public Utilities ' Commission have the expertise necessary to provide the installation of servicing to modernbusiness and industry? Goderich ... Public Utilities Conf'mission does have the expertise toprovide services to modern business and in- dustry. Four of our senior employees have over ninety years experience providing services •to industry and business. We have built our own sub stations and high voltage lines,. and have completely maintained the same. The Utilities have constructed, • and •now, maintain all our water lines with only a staff of three. Last year we were told that with heavy demand over the Christmas period , Goderich . might face `brown outs'. Can the Goderich Public 'Utilities Commission supply the power necessary for new industry locally, such as Borg War- ner? The Goderich Public Utilities Commission can supply any new local industry such as Borg Warner,' and another dozen plants like them, and . more, with no problem. The problem regarding - brown' outs will occur, only if Ontario. Hydro faces shor- be a conducted as well, and with better communication, by a standing committee of Town Council? ' Councils as a rule have too many Committees, with numerous meetings and problems, without the added burden of administering Public Utilities. With the revenue of the • Goderich Public Utilities well over $2,000,000:00 in 1976,it is in- deed a full time job for a separate body to administer it. Also, if a committee. of council were in control,• political pressures could unduly affect the sound operations of the system. As for better com- munications, ' many thousands of dollars are spent each year by'•OntarioeHydro, and 'your Utilities, to •com- inunicate with the customers on r'adio., TV and newspapers., GOderch silver .� i-versary an Mr. and Mrs. Alvin McGee, celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary Saturday, November 27 ata dinner held at penmiller Inn. Present were the best man for the wedding 25 years ago Len McGee and his wife Donna from Brantford; the matron of honor Mrs. Brian Hallam and her husband from Auburn; and the flower girl Mrs. Stene Irwin (Bonnie McGee) and her husband from Thamesford. Alsopresent for the dinner were the four sons: William and his wife Toni from. Dunnville; 1 ,on from University • o • Western Ontario, London; Tim from University of Toronto; and Martyri. The mothers of Alvin and Bertha were present as well, Mrs. Reg. McGee from Goderich; Mrs. Otto Popp from Clinton. The wedding took place. in • Dungannon United. Church December 22, 1951, theRev. George Wattoffj,piating. Our meeting dates were listed in the column "Civic Corner" in. this paper, prior to the day of the meeting. What motivates you to seek election to the Goderich Public Utilities Commission,? I -_guess the same things motivate me to seek re- election t� the Commission as have motivated me in the past to serve on the Council, right through from Councillor to Mayor, and- then on to the ' P.U.C. - that is, civic pride, my concern for our town and its citizens, my interest in the industrial development and. how it affects our Utilities, and last, but not least, my desire to help administer our Utilities for the benefit of our Town, and its future generations: - - •E X HAZLITT, SHIRLEY A.
