J1M'PETERS dentist What special abilities would • you bring to the P.U.C? I hope I have shown through the various positions. held on service and public bodies a degree of leadership necessary for.such a position. I have had experience on Council which should prove valuable as background knowledge for such aposition and thirdly, I have a real desire to do what I can to carfy on the high standard of. ' the Goderich P.U.C. and to improvethat standard where possible. Do you, as a candidate, feel you have the -time necessary te attend all meetings of the Public Utilities Commission and to be in attendance during the whole of those meetings? - Absolutely yes. I un- derstand•that the P.U.C.,meet once per month. I have the time to attend' the whole meeting without - any dif- ficulty. Does the local Public Utilities Commission • have the expertise necessary to. provide the installation ' of servicingto modern•business, and industry? • I feel the people of Goderich• have been exceptionally well served by the P.U.C. over the years. .Ask • yourself: "How many local power in- terruptions have we. : had during • •'your • memory resulting from local break- down?" Mr. Weaver and his suc- cessor . Mr. Ralston have given . excellent leadership. Our line crews are second to none - witness the recent job they did to •help '.restore service during an ice storm near Exeter. Doesit hake the expertise? - The fine record speaks for itself. • Last year we were told that with heavy demand over. the Christmas period Goderich might face `brown outs'. Can the Goderich Public Utilities Commission supply the power necessary for new industry locally, .such _as , Borg War- ner? The days 'of inexpensive, surplus power are over. We must accept this fact as a way of life for the future. At the same time it is beyond .the scope of a P.U.C. Com- missioner to . have expertise on the merits and demerits of the generation of power by water, fossil fuels or nuclear energy. •(Although I am sure. we' all have very define ideas'on the potentially bad side effects of all three sources.) What is within our scope is to snake certain that we bargain for the best priced and most abundantservice available. Also we must make sure we carefully .conserve our allotment so that we can offer an attractive picture for newitidustry.' You mentioned Borg Warner specifically. As a councillor I fought for the inclusion of our effluent By- law in the offer to purchase by Borg Warner. In a similar vein I would not favour a new' industry which used an ex- cessive (and I emphasize `excessive') amount of power. Are Public •Utility Com- missions necessark om-missions•necessary or could. the affairs of public utilities be conducted as well, and with better communication, by a 'standing committee of Town,Couneil? Raving spent two years on Council is, T feel, very valuable to service on the Yes the P.U.C. is necessary and could not be conducted by a standing cainm.ittee of- Council. I feel it is necessary for the RUC. to have greater autonomy than a standing committee of Council could Offer, but by the sane token. better corrimunication could 4 maintained. I would keep i touch with my colleagues on Council to help solve our mutual problems. The mayor is of course an ex -officio member of the P.U.C. and his presence helps in this regard. What motivates you to seek election to the. Goderich Public Utilities Commission? • I ain motivated by the challenge to help forestall problems relating to • th'e- P.U.C. before they become serious. The supply of elec- tricity and safe water can no longer be taken for granted - with proper planning we can get by, and. Goderich will prosper. One last thought. I would urge voters to take the up- coming elections very seriously and getout to vote. If you do not vote' you let others decide for you. Goderich` needs a strong .CounciI. and P.U.C. for the trying times ahead. Murphy r......,. (continued from page I.9M resides with a very few in- dividuals. At the beginning of these questions I indicated what my capabilities and qualifications for this office are. In the light of these qualifications, my interest in the community and my .belief in participation, I felt I should ,. let my name stand, of course, with the aspiration of being elected. ' • . .
