(continued from page,IOA)
is mainly in the nature of
prestige and ceremony.
I am saying this only
because so often the mayor is
unfairly blamed for general
municipal shortcomings. Any
mayor's promises to ache
electorate • are ..most likely
sincere alright, but if the
expected results do not
materialize it is either
because the majority of
council had Other ideas or
because there simply was not
enough manesy.,The paving of
Suncoast Drive was in the
lattercategory.
Road improvement is
traditionally a high .priority
item with any council. We
:have a five-year systematic
road improvement program
which„we have tried to follow
within .our means. Only the
new council can tell you with
any meaning "where' the
subject will stand in the order
of.priorities•for the new -term.
At present assessment in
‘Goderich stands at about 60
percent residential and 40
percent commercial. Ideally
this should be reversed. How
could this be achieved?
It remains important to
attract new industry and
business, not only fdr
assessment but for jobs as
well. Such addition would
mean real improvements
only if we succeed in doing it
• on a basis compatible with
the services we can supply
within our means, and
without in any way en-
dangering our vital en-
vironment.
As our somewhat distant
location contributes to
transport costs and dif-
ficulties for industry, I am
'-"'increasingly wondering why.
our waterways are not put to
better and more popularuse
in this' part of the country:
There are. - most likely
practical reasons of which I
am not aware, but I would
certainly be :in favour of
trying .to attract the Federal
Government's . attention for
creating more extensive
facilities in our commercial
harbour. .
Apart.- from,.,a ' promotion
and attraction job in this field
I cannot see what the
municipal government could,
do directly to reverse ,, the
assessment basis aryl to take
the weight off the. residential
-taxpayers.
Inwhat terms do you see.
Goderich 20 years from now?
How, during the upcoming
term,: • can the new council
prepare for "the future in
terms of long range financial
planning, servicing,• tran-
sportation, land acquisition,
etc.?
I sincerely hope that 20
,years from •now this hand-
some town will continue to be
the clean place with healthy
air where a, young teenage
• girl can walk safely home
from a friend's place in the
evening.
I hope we have, collec-
tively, sense enough • to
welcome, in gradual doses,
planned growth which does
not drastically change our
basic character. There -should
continue to be • small towns
and big- cities for a choice of
lifestyles.

more frequent public

months or at least at the end'
of the first year off the term)
where the 'people can ap-
proach theirrepresentatives
either with questions,
criticism or expressions of
.appreciation., I would
welcome any open give-and-
take discussion very much.
Can citizens fully and ac-
curately ' understand the
dealings of council through_
,the local press?
Nothing replacespersonal
attendance at council
meetings, if one wants to be
fully informed. .One cannot
expect any newspaper to give
a full report on hours of
meetings at which the trivial
items are in the- grab-bag
with the more important
issues. Any major or con-
troversial subject is usually
covered in sufficient detail to
give the readers a fair and
accurate account of council
decisions as well as in-
dividual councillors.' stand
and conduct'.
Personally I have always -
promoted the idea of an 'ex-
tensive Council Briefs section
in the paper, possibly' all
small items together in one
location. Even a relatively

STAN PROFIT
.... barber
What special abilities
would you bring to the council
table?
I have always said that
there is nothing particularly
special about Stan Profit.
I believe that I. do have the
ability to relate to people,
however, 'it is .impossible to
satisfy all of them I have
done'mybest over the past six
years. The experience I have
gained in those years, as
Councillor, Deputy Reeve and
Reeve I can bring to- council,
and it should, I think, stand
me in good stead to tackle the
problems which no doubt lie
ahead.
Do you, as a candidate, feel
you have the time necessary
to attend all meetings of
council and its committees..
and to be in attendance
during• the whole of these
meetings?
Yes Ido.
• If ' expenditures had to be
• cut during•the coming term of
council where would .you'
economize? Harbor, airport,
•
What motivates you to seek
election to. Goderich Town
Council?
I am sure I would be. ;.-
critical of some of the council
work; the next thing isto get
up and try to do it.. better. I
like to talk about many
subjects; it is also important
to work on them.
There are different kinds of
people intown and it takes a
group of . different kinds of
persons, to represent us all
fairly. There is much general
and 'specific cynicism about
councils. In my own way tam
trying • to reduce it. This
continuous challenge gives
me a feeling of time well
spent.
.Please permit me . to ex-
press one appeal to the.
public.. Council members'
doors are . open- to you on
public business every day for
years. Just once every. two
years we are asking you to
take a few minutes to go out
and vote. If you think that a
member has worked well or
that a new candidate has good
potential, do remember that
your voteis important and
that without it he or she may
not be elected.

Living hastily beyond our
means basically limits our
freedom in the long run. I
would like us to by able to
resort more to the healthier
reserve "fund' financing in-
stead oflithe expensive
borrowing. .
Whatever can be done with
our beforehand limited
financial • resources during
the next council's two years -
there are " many important
considerations for which no
- large amounts are needed.
Foe a start - let us protect our
famous and important core
area in a meaningful manner.

years from now the many
hundreds of trees we have

shapely, giving shade and
beauty, adding to the graces
of our town.
;• Do you feel public par-
ticipation is desirable? If so
what would you do to increase

Can relate to people
parks, works and engineering_
or other areas?
What is wrong with
economizing all across the
board? Now may be the time
to say no to some projects,
even though a government
grant may be available. How
good is a grant, if we cannot
afford our share of the
project. However I am not
saying we should •not take
advantage of grants when
they fit ourneeds, and
financial status. Priority is
the key word, it always has
been to me.
Do you"feel that the
Ministry of. Transportation
and Communication's
recommended design for the
widening of . Highway 21
through Goderich is the best
possible solution?
The best `possible' solution
should have been taken care -
of many .years. agog .i.e.
straightening of the highway:
through to the lights at five
points intersection.
I do believe the M.T.C.'s
design -is the best `practical'
solution at this . time. The
traffic warrants it.I do agree
with Mrs. Haydon re the trees
which will have to go, but,
there are facts of life which
have to be faced whether we
like them or not. Keep in
mind however, that it will not
be widened until the ministry
has the money to designate
for this project. Who knows
when that will be? a
- The Mayor's. inaugural
address promised Suncoast
Drive would be paved during
the 1976-76 term. This has not
been done. The inaugural
address also said the main
priority for the 75-76, term
would be road improvement.
Do you think this prornlse has
• been fulfilled? Where does
road improvement stand in
the order of priorities for the
new term?
I am obviously not
responsible for the Mayor's
inaugural address, • but . I
would also saythat it is
equally as obvious that
Suncoast Drive was net done
because council felt there was
more need elsewhere in town.
I think council kept road
improvement' high on the
priority list, but we never
seem to be able to do as much
as we would like to.
There simply is not enough
money. I would say roads will --
be high an the priority list;.
but just where it can be
placed depends upon next
year's council, and how they
evaluate the priorities.

At present assessment in,.
Goderich stands at about 60
percent residential and 40
percent commercial. Ideally
this should be reversed. How
could this be achieved?
Industrial growth is the
obvious answer. When you
say commercial, .I thi.n'k of
industrial assessment. We
could sure use more in-
dustries in town, but, in my
mind this ties in with the
previous question on roads.
What I mean is, if we can
close the Borg-Warner deal, it
will mean Suncoast Drive will
have to be extended froth.
Hwy.. 21 through to .Hwy. 8.
This would, I think, relieve •
someof the . heavy truck
traffic using Hwy. 21 at
Britannia Road. So you see
most of these problems are
Correlated. Goderich is
growing, and I am . afraid
experiencing growing pains.
Better to have these pains,
than not to grow.
In what "terms do you see
Goderich 20 years from now?
How, during the upcoming
term, can the new council
prepare for the future in
terms of long range financial
planning,. • servicing, tran-
sportation: land' acquisition,
etc.? •
G0000d question.
Itis very hard to say where
we will be in 20 years in terms
of development. It is vital.
that we conduct ourselves in
the best possible manner in
the ensuing years. This is
where those grants come to
play, referred to in the third
question. If we budget road
construction money carefully
over the next few years we
can take advantage of the
neighborhood improvement
(continued on page 15A).
