I feel I have much to offer to the 1-luron Coulty Board of Education. I have had eight. years experience in teaching. All of those years I spent in )Huron -County except the two years I taught in our Arctic. i have been away from teaching for over five years. Since our marriage In 1967 • (John's Centennial Project) I. have taken an active part in the managing and operating of our farms. My cultivating • and tractor driving has 'im- proved with age. rI share in the decision making and' ownership of the farm and I. arn• cOnscious of the fact that it takes 41anning ,and hard. work to ,make a success of farming. I believe this is true. with our educational system also. Planning and hard work is needed by our trustees. Trustees must become more familiar with the whole -system. I feel with my teaching background and my involvement in managing the. farm, I know many of the questions that need to be. asked. I amseeking election because I am concerned and on a. personal note, because we have a daughter who will soon be school age. As a parent I want the best for my child the same as you want the best for your child, but the. time is here to ask ourselves if we are getting the best for our rrro'ney. -1 Is the Huron County Board of Education providing the best (service possible • in the area of remedial and other special education? A special education program is being ;carried out in Huron • County. For • example, we have come -a long way in our training for the retarded. Other programs have not been as successful, but they haven't been com- plete failures either. I know •we need more co-ordination• within our schools. -• The classroom teacher and remedial teacher must know what each other is doing. We • must consider children of all abilities, whether they are, • slow -learners, emotionally dirsturbed, average or of • genius ability. In some schools we have very good programs and i other schools it seems to be hit and miss' affair.- The prograrn seems to be suc- cessful if the principal of the school his teachers and sees that the program is properly organized and carried out. Sometimes we blame teachers, when maybe we should be questioning the principals. • I feel we have the resources foran excellent program, but • better use should be made of these resources. What special abilities would you bring to the Huron• -' County Board of Education, and what motivates you to seek election? • • . The abilities would be four year's experience as a 'board - . member along with the • successful- operation of mv own farming enterprise. - The motivation aspect on my part is that L am an in- terested parent and 1 enjoy • serving the electorate in the • capacity as their represen- • tative on the board. Is .the Huron County Board of Education providing the best service possible in the •area of remedial and other special education? *, • Remedial • and special education are relatively new to the schools of Huron. It - came into Huron schools in 1969 and improvements are made in ,this area as ex- • perience and study is gained by participating in • it. I believe we are doing the best we can under the cir- cumstances of restraint and lack of total experience in this new field. At present each municipality collects education tax dollars, is this the best system or should the Board of Education levy its own tax? At th6 outset the board of education set its own levy and sends this to each municipality for them to collect for us. This I believe is a saving in respect to sending • out two tax notices and • having a separate tax collecrtion office for the education levy. The people of Huron care about the quality of education int the County, yet they are , apathetic. No one attends ',Board of • Education meetings; there is little • understanding of Board af- fairs. Would open committee • meetings help? We thought open committee meetings would help and as of February 17, 1975 the Education and Management committee meetings are open • as were . the regular Board •.. meetings. We have spokeh carrying certain meetings to the five area high schools. At present each don't do to earn the right to be municipality collects an educator of our children. • education fax dollars, is this Also when board members the best system or should the are phoned about a problem 'Board of Education levy its in the schools, they shouldn't own tax? I would have to investigate . this further, but off the top of my hat I wouldhave to support leaving the tax collection as it is. At least this way the .municipality knbws how much education is costing in comparison to its own cost. Education has already beep taken so much away from the municipality that this is the last cord to be severed.I feel ie need' to - keep that line open. ., • - Also ..from ' an economic vieWppint, knowing the Board of Education, a new staff would be hired to duplicate the -work that is now done -by -7 . our municipal gOverrirhent. • The people of Huron care about quality -of education in the County, yet they are apathetic. No one attends • Board of Education meetings; there, is little understanding of Board af- fairs. Would open committee *meetings help? I honestly feel that very few people would attend corn- :mittee meetings, but the ratepayer should have the right to go if he -or she wishes., One -reason we have so much apathy is because only final decisions are announced and no one ever knows the reasoning behind, that deeision. . do feel' that work for salary negotiations should -be conducted in a closed meeting. What is fair for the teachers is:fair for the board,. What will you, if elected to the Board of Education, do to make the Board more ac- cessible to the people? feel•every board member is as close as your phone. We seem to have a society who likes to complain, but doesn't like to find out the facts. Everyone — including • reportefs -- are able to visit the schools, the board office • and board meetings. • I would like to see our newspaper present stories on what is really happening in our schools. What is hap- • pening to 'the curriculum? What Special Education program is used in our schools? Who are our ad- ministrators? Run a "Meet the Teacher" series -- all the teachers, department heads, principals, vice -principals. Tell what these people do or request of the electorate or.at the discretion ofthe board chairman. • What will you, if elected to the,Board of Education, do to make .the Board more ac- cessible' to the people? At present the suggestions in the previous question is the only one I canthink of. I am open for suggestions in this regard; and I am totally available to my electorate (telephone number 524-8036). JOHN W STB RO• M .... farmer • I suggest a forum of discussion in each area at the In your view, what are the respoasibilities of a Board of Educationmember? My duties are to represent: in the best interests of the electorate of Goderich and Colborne townships; and to bring their concerns to the board and the administration and also to make known their wishes in establishing board policies, in which the school system must operate. .. • SHIRLEY HAZLITT ....housewife should be" sent Out by their , representative two or three • times a year, The Board of Education is badly in need of a public relations program. This could be a start, In your view, what are the responsibilities of a Board of EdUcation member? A board -member must take 'an active part in all meetings. He - or she should. ask questions and research topics • before. decisions are made on policy- A member cannot make sound judgements in a board . room without ',first -finding-. out . how parents, students, teachers, , and ad- ministrators feel.: Board members .must be accessible to .all county repidents and ...consider • all 4, -r -phases of education busineSs.. - -A trustee should be ready to bring new ideas to the System. Some m ay be adopted and- some may not • .be, but in the dialogue pass the problem. onto _ the sc,rneone, .may produce . a principal 'without' a follow-up.. better idea. Follow-up on • many board • •. decisions seems to be lacking. •would try to alleviate this problem: know the Board of Education is not answerable to our municipal council, but I feel communication is im- portant because we serve the samapeople. If I am electedI would either •visit Colborne and . GOderich Township councils,onCe a inonth.or send a report Of.my activities as a board member. I' also feel a newsletter to. ratepayers If I am elected I can't promise miracles. I can only promise I will ask questions and bring ideas to the board ineetings • and hopefully represent you the tax- payer. • • WELCOME - SERVICE would:like to call you with "'housewarming gifts" and in- formation about Your rnw location.
