'Although the bonspiel was not filled with the usual 16 teams, organizers think that the event could be termed very successful. The competition was keen, the food, served by - Bill Acker was delicious and the prizes were'" excellent. Teams . participating were from Durham, Mitchell, Guelph; Goderich, Seaforth and Vanastra. In the first draw, the Durham rink consisting of the Shane family took the h ours with three straight ns; second was the Sw aforth rink consisting of Bob Wilson, . Marg Fleming, Bill Fleming and Sharon Wilson; third place went to the' Goderich team of Torn and Betty Moore and Barb *nem Hawkins. in the second draw, the Durham team consisting of the other half of the Shane family made a clean sweep and were awarded firstprize; second was the Vanastra rink of John Brownridge, Kay Sharp, Denis Lebrun and Gayle Brownridge; third spot went to the Seaforth team of Bill Campbell,, Gwen Pat terson, John Patterson and ' Grace Campbell. The -winning teams were introduced and the. prizes awarded by the sponsor ofthe bonspiel; Mr. Harry Merriman, manager of . the Clinton branch of the Royal Bank. Ladies on the not so lucky teams each received a carnation which had decorated the supper tables. On behalf of the Vanastra Curling Club the organizers.. would like to express their gratitude and appreciation to Mr. Merriman for helping to make this . event such a success. instant fears 'by the organizing committee members that it would flop. Up to about two weeks before the dinner only half thetickets were sold and the full lineup of sports celebrities had not been assured. The spirit of the event took hold however and the hall was filled for the -'6:.30 cocktail hour when the ticket holders arrived to meet some • of the personalities.' face to face. . • King Clancy perhaps came closest to summing up the emotional effect of the evening when he said the dinner was in aid of a good Cause . but was also ` very beneficial to the community. and should be staged tan nually. He said there was something very sentimental about a dinner like the one Goderich had, something that draws people together in a. spirit of friendship that is both pleasant and lasting. Clancy was one of the main attractions of the evening. The Toronto Maple Leaf vice president and former hockey great rocked the hall with -- laughter as he recalled the old days of hockey and some' of the prantcs and humorous goings on in the' professional world of today. He. removed the gap that seems to be prevalent between a star and a spectator and made those in attendance aware that people in professional sports are the same as those in amateur. ranks except they are paid - more. ' He said the talent gap between the two groups may be wide but the human aspect of professional sports should not be' too wide so that the fan forgets that professional athletes are people too. "We have fun in hockey, he said.. "We enjoy our game the same way you , people enjoy playing shinny.at your arena and when the fun' goes out of the game you should get out too no matter what level you play at." • • Graham Leggett, a `man very few people knew of prior to the dinner, will not be forgotten . by . those in =; at - If youare interested in playing Chess call Jim Kingsley at•.524-9019.•for details on joining the club. The third week of Industrial League. Curling saw two previously undefeated teams go down. to. defeat and three previously winless teams get their first taste of victory. Only one team retained the label' of undefeated - the Assessment. Office.• - This week's team consisted of Michele and Greg Hansen and .Linda and Jim Bell. This husband and wife. team handed Tom Love's Victoria and Grey Team its first loss by the convincing score of 9 to 4. The DRMCo Plant Team got their first win ofthe year on Thursday. Their victim was the previously unbeaten Financial Team. ' DRMCo skip, Jack Kellough, wanted to take credit for his upset victory but modesty and his three teammates prevented him from doing so. It was a night for surprises as the Teacher no. 3 Team Assessment team still undefeated • hit tendance. Mr. Leggett is a master at speaking at fun- ctions like the -dinner and made everyone' there forget the problems .the arena roof' fund is encountering and the occasional, bitter feelings that are developing over the issue.. • He told the guests that the ai'ena may well be one of the centres of community ac- tivity in Goderich and should be maintained. He : added however that as ari institution it should not be put on a level differen, from other facilities used in minor' sports'. He said Goderich should make gvery effort to preserve its .minor athleticgroups and facilities because •they represent the centre of'the lives of many of the children growing up here. The 'gu'ests at the dinner spent as much time on their feet as they did eating their meal. Master of ceremonies Johnny Brent introduced the head table and barely managed to . get the celebrities names mentioned before the guests had dropped their knives and forks and were giving them a standing ovation. . Dinner. organizers Larry''- Jeffrey,; =:Jim Banks, Ben Graham, Bill . Clifford and. Chris Cavanaugh received standing ovations as did the Legion Ladies, Auxiliary who donated their time to prepare and serve the meal, donors of titre door prizes and food and ticket sellers who pushed and promoted the event promising just what hap- pened, a' fun evening. Larry Jeffrey; who was thrust into the' spotlight for his work promoting the evening, tried in vain to turn the group's attention to other people who had helped make the evening'a success. "I just sold tickets;'' -he • said.; "The whole' meal cost leis than $1,000. You can'. t sit 250 people downto a beef dinner for' less than that unless you have a lot of people giving up a lot of tirne'.and - food to do it. I want to -thank them all very, niuch." The result of the affair may. have proved that a celebrity dinner is something that Goderich responds well to and may bring about an annual affair for a different cause. People are already talking about next year's dinner. ONTARIO MUSTARD -GROWERS LTD. are now contracting MELLOW MUSTARD For further information please contact your local representative. Aim & Barry Cleave at' 565-5016 also recorded its first triumph of the' campaign handing the Kinsmen Team a close 5 to 4 loss. The Kinsmen took the loss with class but vowed to get revenge : next week when they face the Teacher no. 1 Team. Rounding out this unusual • night was a fine first victory for:• Jim Bolan's DRMCo Office Team. The unlucky half of this match -up was the Teacher no. 2 Team': The final. score of this ,hard fought game which produced some fine shots from both sides was . 7-5. Due to an.unfortunate mix- up the ninth team did not play - at nine o'clock against a Skip's Choice. Team. The Industrial League would like. to apologize to the Skip's Choice League for this ac- cidental foulup and sincerely hope it will be the only such incident from either league this winter.
