Penfold) ailing club.holds ards night The Goderich Sailing Club held its fourth annual banquet and awards night at the Maitland Country Club . on Saturday, November 20. This year's banquet doubled as a fund raising event, and the banquet and a draw for floral centrepieces donated, by Mary Carroll,. raised approximately $200.00 to go towards repayment of a loan obtained two years' ago for the purchase" of Petrel sailboats. These boats are. used in the junior instruction program co-sponsored by the Goderich Sailing Club, the Town of 'Goderieh, and ' the Ministry of 1 Culture 'and Recreation. Vice -Commodore. Doug Bundy announced the Junior Awards. On Nevember 13, Walkerton ' eame to Vanastra and were trounced 11-3 by the end of the first period it was 3-1 for the Steelers. Goal scorers were Mike Wedlock, assisted by Mike Hodges,. Rob Trebish' unassisted, and Ken Reid assisted by Hodges. Walkerton came out in the second period and squeezed. in 'a fast one after only 37 seconds had been played. But the balance of the second period goals were scored by the Steelers. Rob Trebish from Mike Hodges, Larry Madge from Danny Maillet; Rob Trebish from Mike Hodges . and the final goal .of 4 i of the season was handed them in Watford where they were doubled by the Generals Down at int 5-2 8 4. o none point the, Merchants battled back ,.to a.. 5-4 deficit but couldn't hold the Generals off and gave up three unanswered goals•in the final period. Watford jumped to a two goal lead before -Milt Place combined with Ron. Whet- stone at 10:57 -of .the, first period. Watford scored .twice before Place ' notched his second goal of the game with just over a minute expired in the second period. Place grabbed .a pass from Whet- stone and slipped the puck past the Watford netminder. About halfway through.' the period Watford grabbed their fifth marker before Goderich started their rally. Place got his hat trick with 21 seconds left in the second period scoring unassisted. Cam McDonald brought the Merchants to within one :at the six minute ?ark ofthe third period but Watford added two more in the next continue winnin this period from Danny. Maillet and Mark Rowe for 7-2 lead for Goderich. The only other goal scored by Walkerton came early in the third period. The Steelers then scored four quick goals, two by Larry Madge assisted— by Steve Walters 'and Danny. Maillet with singles by Mike Hodges and Randy Graham for a final score of 11-3 for Goderich. Saturday,°November 20 the Steelers met up with some. real competition in the Mount Forest team. The final score was 6-5 for . Goderich, the closest game the Steelers have had yet. Goal 'scorers for Goderich were Larry 1Madge. with three goals -and one assist; -Danny Maillet .with two ' goals and.' two assists; Rob Trebish with one goal and two assists and Mike Hodges one assist. This game was for four points.•,. • The Lakeport Steel Ban- tams travelled to Port Elgin on Sunday for another vic- tory 7-4. After eight games the Lakeport Steel . Bantams are still undefeated with a total of 16 points. Believe me, it's nice to have a good all round hockey " club and especially two good goal tenders like Steve Gallow and Brian Shewfelt, Keep up the good work! The Lakeport Steel Ban- tams will be playing their next game in Vanastra on Saturdav night at 7 p.m. when they play host to Listowel. Ur 11� two minutes ,and went on to - win 8-4. Duckworth held off • a late charge by C.C.A.T: to salvage the tie for the Mer- chants who at one point led '4 1. George Gould drew the game's first blood at the seven minute mark of the opening period with Mark Ryan and ,Barry" Bloch drawing :° assists. Cam McDonald made it 2-0 Mer- chants about a minute later with Ron Corriveau and Ron Whetstone assisting., C.C.A.T. got back in the game with less; than a minute left in the period when Jim McGee beat Duckworth to make it 2-1. Goderich cameout flying in the second period taking a7,341 lead at the 3:20 mark when Lee Arbour : corhbined with Cam McDonald on a goal. Two minutes later Frank Hagan ended the Merchants scoring -with a goal- assisted by Jim Bell and Paul Corriveau. C.C.A.T. came back to within one . with two quick second period goals from Larry Krantz and Peter Duenk and finally beat Duck- worth for the tie at the A:26 mark of the third period. Rick Duckworth was named, the star of the game for the Merchants. The Merchants face Huron Park in their next home game Tuesday in Vanastra. improved junior sailor. First place in the junior racing series went to the,. team of David Parsons and -- David M.cDonaAld. Second and third places went to'the teams of Barb. Pamminger Doug Elder and Bob : and Doug McKenzie. . . . - Race committee chairman George Robertson announced the senior awards. These were as follows: Dingy Class - Paul Parsons, Ken, Dawson and -Jim' Mulhern. Fireballs . Class included' George Penfold, Harold Jeffery and David Smith. Cruising Fleet winners were Ron Lee, Marth and Bethany Robertson and George Robertson. Recipients of the Reeves Cup which is presentedan- nually to the sailor with the best combined record of participation and sailing skill were Ron and Joan Lee of Walton. Awards were also presented for the round -up regatta, held annually on Labour' bay weekend. -• -Winners inthe cruising fleet event were Martha- and. ..Bethany Robertson, Tom McGill and Ron. Lee. • Winners in Centreboard Class were Ken Dawson, Doug .Bundy and Al Mullin, and,John Watson. Overall winners of the regatta were Martha and Bethany Robertson. Special mention was made of the contribution 'to the sailing program by Lou Martins, the starter timer for the 1976 season. A dance followed the banquet, with music supplied by Darryl Carpenter and Dave Cloet. This event finishes the 1976 season for the 'sailing club. The first event. in 1977 will be the annual general meeting to. be held at the Maitland Country Club on J nuary 6, 1977; oderich. thumps t.
