The Goderich Recreation
and Community Centre
Board decided to back a
proposal made° by Paul
Schutz recently granting the
Lions 100 percent of the gate
receipts from .Young Canada
Week for three years in
return for a $12,000 pledge
from the service club for the
arena roof.
In a special meeting Friday
night • the board decided to
offer the Lions the deal
provided they respond with a-
$12,000 pledge for the roof. If
the club does not comply with
the pledge, demands, the
decision to grant them_ the
gate receipts. automatically
expires.
The suggestion for the
trade off ' was made at a
meeting of fund raisers called
by Chris Cavanaugh. An off-
the-cuff remark suggesting
w that the town give the arena
to the' Lions to run resulted in
the suggestion by Bob Allen, a
member of the arena building
'committee, that the Lions be
given the arena- for Young
Canada Week in return for
financial support now, for the
roof.
Paul Schutz expanded the
.suggestion to cover the three
year period in return for a
$12,000 pledge. He explained
to the board that he was only.
suggesting the deal and would
have to take it to the Lions'
board of directors • and
• ultimately to the club
members for final decision.
Some board members
seemed to have mixed
feelings about the
arrangement. They all
wanted to see the arena roof
fund get the help it badly
needed but they felt they may
be setting a precedent that
would cause problems in the
future.
Mayor Deb Shewfelt said he
was flatly opposed to the
proposal claiming the rec
board had striven over the
years to keep the arena
running "►n the black without
having to charge high rental.

"I would 1 e very disap-

The mayor said the rec
board may be confusing their
duty as a recreation board
and their duty as fund
raisers. He said council would
undoubtedly be asking ` the
board why the -a arena ice.,

move is made to ac-
commodate donors to the roof
fund. '' He said the public is
paying for the roof out of its
pocket,and would probably be
upset if the ice - rentals go up
sharply whenthe building is
reopened. -
Board member' Lynn
Meyers said -'he was very
concerned about' comments
made at the fund raising
meeting concerning, con-
ditions at the arena. He said -

Mr. Schutz said he may be

working with -Larry Jeffrey
on another bigger celebrity
dinner for the arena roof.
-Mr. • Jeffrey said he would
be willing to help organize a,
dinner for next year. ,;sand
hoped to ,make the ;affair'
bigger by asking more
celebrities to attend. He said
this : year's effort should
realize $8,200 for the fund and
a bigger dinner may mean
half that again.
Bob Allen told °the Lions
representative that
everything on the ' arena Elsa Hayden -said she had
project .had been ;geared to, been listening to the
Young Canada Week. He: said discussions during the
the committee had •met evening and felt that very few
several times ' with the con- ,
positive ideas had been
suggested. She said there
may -..be one avenue to raise
money as a 'result of the
meeting • but the rest of the
'night had been spent
discussing negative thoughts.
She added that the donations
announced during the
meeting should be refreshing
for fund raisers. •
The committee members
discovered that Conklin
Lumber had donated $5,000;
Signal -Star Publishing $2,000;
the Rotary Club had pledged
another $2,000; the Inter-
national Union of Aerospace
Workers had pledged $3,000;
and that the celebrity dinner
should make about $8,000.
John Doherty said. he was
appreciative of the efforts of
service clubs but added he
felt the people of Goderich
relied too heavily on the clubs
in situations like this. He said
he wondered where allthe
people. doing all the
"mouthing" were , when
meetings were arranged and
asked why they were not
"putting their money up".
"People come up to me on
the street and ask why the
hell we did something!" he
said. "I'rn getting fed up with
it."
Chris Cavanaugh pointed
out that it is hard to say to the
town in general that .people
haven't given enough when
some people have given more
than. enough. He suggested
that perhaps there was no
individual community spirit
here, only the spirit'
generated through the ser-.
vice clubs.
