.L.T.. opening productio
staged with great flair
By Ron Shaw'
Goderich Little Theatre
staged 'The Man Who Came
To Dinner' on Thursday,
Friday and Saturday oflast
week :as, its first presentation
of the 1976-77 season.
At risk of finding myself.
sharing , the hot water with
London Free Press reviewer
Doug Bale I must admit that
I did not like the play. But
wait! Before you begin filing
complaints with .the. Ontario.
Press Council please nate
that I say I •.did not like the
"play". • With a few ex-
ceptions the G.L.T.
production was excellent.
-A comedy in .three` acts by
Moss:. Hart and George- : S.
Kaufman • The .Man. Who
-Came To Dinner' was un-
fortunately badly. dated. I -
fully realize that witIkruyalty
costs it is nearly im.possible,.
for community drama groups
to obtain rights to present the
latest . .broadw.ay smash.
'Usually, this state ofaffairs
does •not° hinder such
productions in any way. A.
period' play is a period play.
Or minor items which might
date the playean.ba modified.
Such was not the case with
-- 'Thee: Man :''Who Came :To
Dinner.' The - dialogue and
'script itself was set in a given
period :. early Hollywood.
Thebest jokes relied to a
great extent on the names
and incidents of that time.
Thi days of the silver screen,
radio personalities and the
influence of the big city stage.
Perhaps for those with a
few more years this .
presented no difficulty, for
those of us raised in days of
television it meant a loss - of
reality.
•
That one complaint aside
though I can only hand out
bouquets to the cast, stage
•, crew, director and complete
Little,Th'eatre Group.
The largest bouquet must
go to Michael Watts. .for
presenting the character of
Sheridan. Whiteside with such
life and - power. He also
• deserves considerable credit
for, doingthat while carrying
a very 'heavy part. The
number of lines he was faced
with learning would have
snowed under a mere
amateur.
Kathy Jetlkins' portrayal of
the nurse Miss Preen
deserves equal comment. The
number of lines delivered
may have been nothing
compared to those. of Mr.
Watts but the character
portrayal and comic effect
she provided were out-
standing: I su,,spect manyin
the audience sat in an-
ticipation of her -appearances
on stage. Frank Bisset's part
on stage. Frank Bisset's part
as Dr. Bradleyhad the same -
effect, as did ruth Leonard.
appearing as Harriet StaLtley
(though d might note I,found_.
Mrs,' Leonard a little hardto
hear)._ -
While discussion character
portrayals I would like to note
that Professor Metz (played
by Brian Markson) was one of.
the best I. have ever seen
anywhere. Mr. Markson also
played the role of Wescott. '
Frank ' Carter and Beth
Markson as the Stanley
parents deserve mention as -
do Nancy Flynn as. daughter.
June and: Harry ,Dykstra "as
newspaperthan Bert Jef•
fel-son. F:•
The character 'of.•i•:o-raine
Sheldon, the would be acresss,
'with -round heels,•grated on
me I must admit. Though -I .
suppose it was meant to do so..
That fact can not take' away
from Jennifer ' Black's
presentation of the .part. It
was well done and showed
talent.
•
Pat King as Bev,erly
Carlton and his imitation of
the unseen Lord Bottomly
deserves credit as°i • the
highlight- of the evening.
Certainly off Saturday.
evening when T attended the
audience indicated such. by
, spontaneous applause. Bill .
Cochrane as Banjo solicited a -
similar response.
Joyce Kuran as Maggie
Cutler deserves special
mention. Like Michael Watts
she had a heavy role and
perfornned it with. great
ability.
If is impossible to name
everyone in the cast, in terms
of Little Theatre productions
the cast was huge. In addition °
• there were those .who worked
on stage decoration, snake up,
set construction, properties,
wardrobe, lighting, tickets
and promotion. No less than
2$" people ate . listed in .the
program for behind the sc€ie'
work. The cast numbered 30.
All these people had to be
co-ordinated to produce the
final result we saw last week
