The GDCI junior girls
basketball team advanced to
the Huron -Perth Finals with a
20-9 victory over Wingham in
Wingham. last Thursday. The
victory put coach John
Geiger's girls up . against
Stratford. Central in a two -
game total -point final series,
the first game of which was
played here Tuesday. The
second. ' game was played
Wednesday in Stratford.
Goderich won the semi-
final over Wingham by ef-
fectively using a "full -court
press, avoiding fouls and
'stealing the bali-coutinvously
from the Wingham players.
The GDCI team effectively
controlled the backboards• at
bothk ends. of the court and
managed to play the game in
Wingham's half of the court
about three-quarters of the -
time. These tactics, plus a•
willingness to wait for, the
good shot allowed the
Goderich girls to reverse the
tables on the Wingham team
who had beaten them by three
points during the regular
season.

BYTD
The GDCI junior Vikings
•cost the Huron -•Perth Con-
ference final to Listowel
Saturday in a 15 0 mud -bath
in Listowel.
The Viking : offence was
unable to get . untracked,
partly due to • the almost -
impossible field conditions
which took ' away their
passing and outside running
game, and' partly • due to a
tremendous effort by the
Listowel defensive line.
The Lords gave_up the ball
'. ive times inside their own 25
yard line but their strong
defence kept the Vikings off
the • scoreboard.
As 'in the senior Vikings
• game in Exeter, the smaller
Vikings found the poor field
conditions . worked to.' their
disadvantage.
Kevin Konings, the Lords
hard running fullback, was
the bread and butter of the
Listowel offence, running up
the middle with great "suc-
cess. Hebroke two long runs
for touchdowns. In the first
quarter,. Konnings went 70
yards, and in the third
,quarter rambled 80 yards for
the game's only two touch-
downs.
Other Listowel points came
from a 25 yard single kicked
by: John. Kerr in the first
quarter and a two :point
conversion of their secorid
touchdown on a pass froth
quarterback John Wilson to
John Stone.
•Viking coach Bill Carrow
was not discouraged by the
loss, and credited his team
with "a 'commendable ef-
fort". He commented On the
effective job his defensive
line and linebackers did
through.. most of the game in
containing , the strong
Listowel running attack.
Th :caused several Lords'
ibles and gave the Vikings
the ball several times in the
'Listowel end of the field, The
•
Viking-- offence • had
some success running Wide,
but for the most part was•
stopped cold., by the bigger,
stronger Listowel defensive
'line.
Coach Garrow and his
assistant, Bruce, Baker, both
expressed satisfaction with .
theirclub's season, pointing
to the steady improvement -
that took the team to the
league finals. The junior
Vikings had many young ,
players this season whear
showed., dedication and a
willingness to learn which -the
Viking coaches feel Will put,
them in good stead for next
season. Coach Garrow made
special -mention of returning
players Steve Arbour, Mike
Hovey, Larry Madge, John
O'Keefe; Ed Van.Osch, Rob
Trebish, Wade Raithby and
Dan Maillet. "With these, and
-the other returning players,
we will . have a large con-
tingent of returning ball.
players for next year,many
of whom have seen regular
service this season,"" com-
mented the optimistic coach
of the junior Vikings.
