Corn still not
harvested
If things were bad for . •
Huron country farmers, as A4
reported in this edition two•
weeks . ago, they have gone -
from bad to worse, especially •'
for growers in the central
„part of the . county, where
nearly two feet of snow (61
cm) has been fallen in the last
14days, nearly eclipsing an
all:time record.
Not only has the heavy
snowfall delayed the harvest,
but prices are continuing to
drop, from the low of $2.03 of
two' weeks ago to $1.87 on
Tuesday. .
• Mike ,Miller, associate ag.
rep. at Clinton, said that most
year the corn ,is long har-
vested,'.the fields plowed, and
'the tractors -put away for the
winter, but this year, he said
that as of mid-November, still
10 percent of the corn was still
standing in the field, and a lot
of fall Plowing has yet td be
done. "A lot of the 'pl'owing
will have to be left until next
spring," Mr. Miller said.
The winter wheat . 'crop,
which went in late and. then •
never matured enough before
the Cold weather carne, is also
in poor shape, says Mr.
Miller:
He says the best farmers
can hope for this fate is a kbod
snow cover this inter and a
decent spring.
