Mustangs edge Listowel 6-4
by Brytan Marriage
Last Sunday night, the
----Clinton• ' -'Mustangs- literally

minutes before
0-.minutes-:before game time
and skated off with their -
seventh victory against one
loss this season. -
The ` visiting Mustangs -
handed Listowel their . first
loss of the Juniorta"C" season
in a nip and tuck battle that
ended 6 - 4:
The 'Stangs, who arrived
- late due t.oinclement.
weather, had their warm-up
shortened and ag a result,
started the game off slowly.'
At the halfway mark of the
°' first period Listowel opened
the scoring on a screen shot
from the stick of Paul Ber-
feltz. ' Outstanding goalten •
ding,, by Clinton's Mark
Nelson and Listowel's Kevin
Newbigging kept the of-
fensive power of both teams.
scoreless for the remainder of
the first stanza:
However, Clinton sharp-
shooters came to life in the
second period when . Randy
Millar' and . Ken Robinson
dented the twine for the
'Stangs with assists going to
Robbie Heard on both goals. -
Both the goaltenders were
extremely sharp again in the
second period and as a result,
the 'Stangs came off for their
final rest holding.a one°goal '
lead.
In the third period, poor
officiating kept the Mustangs:
• short --handed from--:the-three-
minute mark. • With Don
Grandson off for, a hooking
penalty; Robbie Heard scored
his first shorthanded goal :of
the evening and five minutes
later with • Ron Sowerby dff
for a major five minute high
sticking infraction, Heard
gave Clinton a4 -1 lead firing
in Tim MacLean's rebound.
Incidently, the Mustangs
played . their finest shor-
thanded hockey of the year as
they, " were , continually
carrying the play to Listowel.
With Sowerby `still in the
penalty box, the Mustang
penalty killers ran .outof gas
and Listowel notched a power
playgoal with only eight
seconds left in Spwerby'.s
penalty, only to have Pete
Thompson return the 'Stangg
three goal lead on a super
individual effort by splitting
the defense at the,13:30 mark.
Two minutes later with.
Robbie Heard having a well -
deserved rest, in the penalty
box, the Cyclones ' notched ,
.another power, play goal -and
tock . only' thirty se,Gonds to
score; again to pull.;w`ithin one
goal.of the 'Stangs"`for the.
remaining four minutes.
As •'previously mentioned
the officials of . the game.
finally called a cheap penalty
on_ ,Listowel_to give the
'Stangs a little`. breathing
-i-oom'rand not -to be outdone;
Listowel coach Murray
Bender, pulled his goaltender
in the final . minute while his
Cyclones. • had their
momentum up.
Clinton coach Bill Weber,
counteracted with Robinson,
Heard and Millar, and
Robinson wonthe faceoff and
put the puck on Heard's stick
who caught the speedy .
centreman, . Robinson, flying
up the left side and put him in
the clear with an empty net to
round off the game, Clinton 6 -
