The Goderich Minor
Hockey Association, schedule
Is, underway in the Vanastra
Arena and according to
GMHA president Don .„Elliott.
is missing only' • one
ingredient, The Fan.
Mr. Elliott said Monday: the
community ingeneral had
respo"nded admirably
towards making the 1967-77
GMHA season ' a success
despite the fact that Goderich
didn't have`an,arena. He said
just about every . avenue of
organization had been han-
dled by . volunteers from
Goderich but added now that
the schedule is underway fans
of GMHA seem to he ignoring
most of the Year's schedule so
far.
Some levels of hockey have
been drawing a considerable
number of fans but Mr. Elliott
said some of the regularsat
the Goderich Memorial
Arena over the past few years
haven't come out to
Vanastra. He said the GMHA
executive wanted to .try to
ensure these people an, op-
portunity to come to the
arena despite the fact they
may not have their _owin_.
transportation"
"Most of the coaches and
players get •together at the
Goderich arena , an hour
before they play in Clinton,”
said Elliott. "I've had quite a
few people call and volunteer
to drive if necessary and if
fans wanted . to get into car•
pools they also Ovid meet at
•
•
•
the arena."
The president said last year
on Friday. and Saturday night
quite a. few elderly people
toed to come to •the arena
early and stay for the night's
hockey. He said those people
had not been coming to
Vanastra and he and the
executive hoped they were
notcoming because of a lack
of transportation.
"Anyone who comes to the
Goderich arena with the team.
will be given a ride to
Vanastra," he said,
The GMHA executiye was
also hoping to discuss tran-
sportation of elderly fans with,.
Goderich service clubs
hoping one . • of .them may
possibly arise to the occasion
Wand' offer regular,rides for.
anyone wishing to go to
Vanastra.
The final registration
numbershave been
calculated by the executive
and the dismal outlook held
for minor hockey this year
was dispelled just prior to the
start of the season. Of the 350
some odd players expected to
return to the. ranks 'of the
GMHA this year 225 signed up
and are playing in Vanastra.
Mr: Elliott said 'the same
surprising rate of par-
ticipation had been witnessed
amongst coaches and
managers despite the poor
turnout early in the year.
The quick success minor
hockey, enjoyed in Vanastra is
-due in part to `the efforts of
Brian, Marriage; -pres en o
the Clinton Minor Hockey
Association. Marriage and
Elliott spent several hours
together, working out an inter -
town house league schedule to
permit • Goderich house
league players , to compete
this year. The Clinton
president' also altered some of
his schedule to permit
Goderich teams' to get game
and practice time inVanastra
with Clinton clubs.
Referees' are another
reasonfor the• success the
GMHA enjoyed in the -last few
organizational days before
,theschedule actually started.
Mr. Elliott said, more
volunteers came out this year
to officiate than ever before
making., the transportation
problem for officials
minimal. •
St. John's Ambulance also
plan- to cover • all GMHA
games to ensure the safety of
the children involved. Clinton
does not have an ambulance
service and the nearest
ambulance is Goderich or
Seaforth.
The GMHA Supporters
Club formed recently and will
be getting their season's
activities underway in aid of
minor hockey. Mr. Elliott
said the combination of all
.these groups and people has
made it apparent that hockey
will be a success this year but
added not enough people are
:coming out to witness that
sucess.
