Free Press review. challenged by Pl'al4iouse as yunfair
the article falls. far short of journalism even in this
the standards of competent particular field."
The Board 'of Trustee of
theAHuron Country Playhouse
have termed an October 26
review in. the London Free
Press "blatantly unfair'4 and
have notified that newspaper
that they intend to appeal to
the Ontario Press Council.
'In a letter to William Heine,
Editor of the Free Press,
W.G. Cochrane, chairman of
the theatres Board of
Trustees, Says, "We note,
however, that the procedures
for presentation to the
Council requirtfirst that the'.
newspaper be .given an op-
portunity to satisfy the
complaint. Therefore, we are
enclosing a copy -of our,
submission for your 'con
sideration."
The, complaint is in con-
nection with.a story headlined
"Huron Playhouse produc-
tion fabelied a disgrace."
- The Theatre's submission
.says.'that "the principal point
.of the article (a demand for
refund of tax dollar con-
tributions tp the theatre) is
unwarranted in the context of
a review of a single off-season
play."
They also say the phrase
"current catastrophe" and
other "`excessively.
derogatory comments do not
recognize the considerable
enjoyment of the per-
formances by the audiences
which can be documented."
The submission claims that
"no explanation or support
was given for the subjective
judgements, 'most
unimaginative of
choreographies;"..a choice
of performers is_inexplicable
. ':standard for their per
formances are inexcusible, -
'Its was so bad," etc:"'
"Strong personal bias is
evident •in the suggestions .
that the Huron ' Country
Playhouse should receive no
government• contributions,
while other .. companies
should;'' , the, complaint
contends.
It is also claimed that the
suggestion or inference that
the Playhouse is either in a
much superior .' position
financially or receives•,
relatively higher public
grants. glen "other theatre
companies ' is "factually in- .
correct." -
The .article is said to •be
"unnecessarily; and un
justifiably damaging to _ a '
relatively new professional
theatre enterprise in rural
Ontario."
The playhouse says that the
"excessive vindictiveness of
the writer, Doug Bale, is
inconsistent with the general
tone of his previous reviews,
and with the reviews'of other
Free Press critics, and with
.the theatre critics of other
:newspapers."
"The . newspaper has
performed a disservice to the
community by publishing
such a bitter and vicious
attack on an enterprise that
has been -supported by
literallyhundreds of
volunteers who have donated
extensive time and money in
an effort ' to bring live
professional theatre to a
community that, otherwise,
would have no opportunity to •
experience this type, of en-
tertainment," the brief says.
• In summing up their
submission the Playhouse
Board said it "recognizes that
the field of drama criticism is
highly
tradition
subjeetiVe and
of excessive
disceotr
has a
licence
in terms of personal comment
compared to ob•jertive

It goes on to note that "in
view of the growth of the
Playhouse box office from
5,000 patrons in 1972, to over
40,000 in 1976, it seems to us
presumptuous of Mr. Bale
and his newspaper to state
categorically, particularly in
the field of the arts, that what
these thousands of 'patrons
have seen and obviously
enjoyed Yr -is':' 'consistently.
Shoddy.'
The Playhouse Board say
that the London Free Press,
and Mr. Bale, far exceed
their qualifications in at-
tempting to create the im-
pression .. that they have
some element of omnipotent
excellence in the field of the
arts.
"By tradition, theatre has
- existed for the entertainment,
' understanding and com-
munication of all people,not
for• the specific requirements
of Mr: Bale or the London
Free Press."
The •brief further contends
that Because of the "obvious
financial capacity of . The
London Free Pressh, as
reflected in the sizeof its
circulation and its "ex-
tremely : heavy content of
-advertising", the newspaper
should be able to afford and
