said the group was interested
in either the purchase of the
hall or entering into a long
term lease to improve it as a
theatre facility- and attract
professional entertainment.
Councillor Bob Allen -said
the request was looked at
when it was submitted to'
council but it was impossible
to enter into a full time lease,
since many organizations
used the facility.
"1 am sure we could
compromise," Allen said,
"but -the building was donated
to the town for recreational
purposes and to use it -in any
other manner would violate
the will of Robert MacKay."
Mrs. Black infcirmed - the
board that Goderich had. a
thriving drama society in the
1890's and the Little Theatre
group has been operatiyelor
approximately i0 years.
She added that live theatre
was ' extremely popular in
Canada arid since the group
has a membership of 700
people' the seating was un-
comfortable and, could -be ,
enhanced with a Moped floor!'
and new seating.
"With the proper facilities:
we cduldattract professional
entertainment and put on
more shims of cur_ own," she
said. "We need the
renovationS more for the
audiencd ' and the --theatre
seats would not discourage
other uses in the hall except
dances'."
Mrs. Black said the group
was not opposed to sharing
the hallyith &ir groups but
would appreciate sole use of it
during performance nights.
On 'occasion -other groups
have used the basement for
meetings during .a Little
Theatre production and the
noise that filtered upstairs
was disturbing to both the •
audience and the actors.
It was 'also suggested that
perhaps renovations could be
undertaken to the rear of the
stage to accommodate, a
dressing room area- to avoid
