But oh, the delight when it starts to grow and flourish! How ni,uch more worthwhile the seemingly unending .pro..t?.lem,s.,,pecome ! • These feelings must have been shared by•the initiators of the Maitland Trail Association last Thursday evening, October 28 when they held their .first annual meeting in the. music room at the Robertson Memorial School, Close to 60 people :packed the room - many . of. them. newcomers —to the Association. Chairman Heinz Hoernig described' tile first year's activities-cautlined the Association's plans and., projectsfor the following year. The eventual aim is to, have a hiking trail that stretches from Goderich" to Wingham, following the Maitland River - including branch trails.. Its develop- ment • is similar to the way .the Bruce Trail was•built. First, the most appropriate route is worked out. Then since much of the route must cross private property, the owners are approached,' with the hones of obtaining their per.inission. This takes the form of an ' unwritten "gen- tlemen's agreement", which may bewithdrawn if the owner has a change of heart. When permission is not granted, the trail must detour around that section.. Road allowances and public lands are also involved. • The responsibilities of the Association don't end with the construction of the -trail, however. Members inspect the trail to repair damage, if any, and to clean up any debris left by unthinking users, and also endeavour td • teach users proper "trail manners". The most im- portant rules, of course, are to stick to the trail, since. it is often on private land, to leave no garbage, and' to do .no harm to the environment. As Mr. Hoernig reported, toextendtoixtent..hike route the ' first year's work has resulted in three excellent and scenic sections, to,. provide good' hiking, snowshoeing -and cross country :skiing for outdoor enthusiasts. Indeed, many hikers have already enjoyed these sections. Trail - Construction Director, Bill Wisser reported en the actual trail con- struction:'` -Many ' local members of all ages - from members of the-G.D.C.I,'s "Quters", under John Smallwood,.. to members whose vigor and enthusiasm belie their age, gave the trail construction great momentum.
