GODERICH 524-2136 Energy minister ,writes Dear. E ditor : This year, the. people of Ontario will spend an . estimated $7.5 billion on .all forms of energy. In short, we've been spending about $900 annually for every man, woman and child in. the• Province .on energy. Up to.20 percent of that could be savedthrough properly maintained vehicles, better driving habits, more careful consumption practices and properly _ insulated homes. Through conservation we could'reduce the"rate of 1. growth ' •of overall : energy costs dramatically. The Ontario Government has proclaimed the first week of November. Energy Conservation Week in order to increase public awareness' of the need to conserve• energy. An increasedpublic • awareness should stimulate people. to take steps to reduce their energy bills -this winter. We hope that the savings that can be made will utirnately add up to a billion dollar reduction in the Province's Overall energy bill by 1980. I would like: to invite your readers to write to you,and share their own reasons on how energy .conservation can be. achieved in everyday situations. I hope that during Energy Con- servation Week you will publish some of the best ideas your .readers - have ,on energy conservation for personal and community benefit.- Dennis R. It then mixes with the • air, is ignited, and burns with a blue flame. The burner may. have a single head F dr a multiple . jet arrangement similar to the burners on a gas stove. It' 'is vitallyim- portant that the air intakes on the sides of the furnace are never blocked, since, they allow access for the com- bustion air. ombustionair. • A. valve limits the amount of gas that is provided to the burner and an automatic regulator• controls the pressure. The pilot light is on continually and ignites ...the flame' when the . burner switches on Page 3 A' .e1l func.tioni;ng, gas furnace should have a thermal efficiency of -78 per cent. -To maintain this, an experienced serviceman should inspect it once a year. Some will. produce much larger ., savings, than others, •but.rethember even the little ones add' .up. Some will require an investment on your, part for instance, .in- sulation; •'others are .free, such as night setback of the .thermostat or turning off .lights._ Even those ' that require a relatively large investment should pay for'. themselves in a few years and thereafter 'return perpetual savings, especially as energy costs rise. Since heating is by far the largest energy consumer in ' the home, usually -accounting for over half of °the :..total household .energy. budget;;' let's look briefly at some possible energysavings in this area. Out of all the measures mentioned in this `supplement, furnace maintenance, insulation and temperature setback are probably the most significant. . Keep in mind that actual savings will vary according' to your climate, '' heating system, house construction, present amount of insulation, and fuel costs. • Stop .winter's biggest headache. It is significant, however, to note that in this example annual fuel costs were cut from $300 to $165 a saving of $135: By following any of the dozens of other measures related to - heatitig'systems, appliances, hot water, ligI ts, cooling and .outside equip- ment, further energy savings and further .cost savings' can be easily achieved. If one also avoids overpac•kaging, disposable products and highly processed foods, still larger savings arre.possible. Therefore; quite apart from further energy* and dollar savings related to the family car, it is quite • possible for-, many families to save more than :$100 annually on home energy costs. Some families could stretch these savings as high as $200 if they have homes . that are currently wasting energy. k In addition to financially rewarding the consumer, such savings will conserve • Canadianenergy sources for future use, lower -. the tremendous costs ofresource development, reduce- .the 'environmental impact of energy and help to provide a better quality of life for us all.
