The Hippocratic Oath
dates back to perhaps the
sixth century B.C. T'he
swearing of this oath was a
traditional part of the
ceremonial of the qualifying
physician' in many univer-
sities. It has been the basis of
ail medical ethics up to the`
present day.
The . oath, in summary,
states that.' a physician will
help the sick according to his
ability and judgement, -with.
never a view to injury • or
wrong doing; he will• not'
administer a poison and will
not `cause abortion • in a
woman' •
As civili'l'a"tion spread
through the centuries, the
guiding principle of the oath
permeated medicine and
society,- Dr. Margaret Mead,•
world famous anthropologist
in • referring to the Hip-
pocratic Oath has said, "All
the advances that"have been
made in the field of Medicine
aredue to this one, simply,
great inventions."
Up to ten years ago or. less,
thevast majority of
physicians approached with a
request for abortion by a
patient would have been
greatly offended, The few
that were done in hospitals
for life threatening situations,
although not protected by
law, were very rarely
prosecuted.
The uneasiness, felt by the
physicians in these cases,
was some of the motivation
behind the move to give
protection to. doctor and,
patient, "It was hardly en-
visioned that the law would be
so abused that •Wholesale

There has been a . great
conspiracy ofsilence from

of making the question of -
