Ethel history tells of
booming brickyard.
The last generalineeting of
the Huron County Historical
Society for 1976 was held in
the Community Centre at
Ethel on the evening ' of
• Wednesday, Octi''20, with a
good attendance.
The ' president, David:
McClure iof Crediton, ex-
pressed his pleasure at
holding a meeting' in this
area, and and also his thanks
on behalf of the Society to the
ladies of the local Women's
Institute for sponsoring the
meeting.
Alter a short business
meeting., Mrs. Ed Gill,
curator of the Ethel W.I.
welcomed all. present, and
chlled upon Robert
Cunningham• who very
capably acted as chairman
and introduced the following
program which was enjoyed
by all present: tap-dancing.
by Misses Dianne and
Dorothy Cox; accordian solos
by Mrs. Otto Pfeiffer; and a
violin solo by Norman
Beirnes who was ac-
companied by Cecil Bateman
at the piano. They entitled a
second rendition, "Whelan's
breakdown"wand dedicated it
to.tfe•local ret -ilk producers:.
Mrs. Priscilla Bay read an
interesting - article on the
early history of • Ethel, as
prepared by Mrs. Douglas
Wardlaw an 83 -year old
resident of the village. She
reminisced on the early in-
dustries and .places • . of
business that used to be in the.
settlement, noting • the
changes that had taken place
through' the years. For in-
stance in "the good old days"
a hair, cut and.a shave were 25.
cents, anda shampoo 10 cents
extra. The Henfryn : b,rick-
• yard was busy turning out
bricks for homes in Ethel and
throughout the district. It is
t
still in operation today and
concentrates on tile making. .
., At one time as many as six
trains per day passed thro'.rgh'
the Ethel station, and the
hamlet even had a jail house.
`I'he story is told that when the
railroad came throughone of
the workers named the place
"Ethel" after his wife by the
same name. This settlement
like• all others in the, early
days boasted of many shops
and industries no longer
necessary today. Aswe have
experienced progress, many
old devices and customs have
become extinct, .and business
•-has moved to larger centres.

different types of farm
machinery necessary in
carrying on farming today;
plus pictures of Station
houses in various places
• •where the trains were taken
out of use, and some ..have
been used; ftsrshops, others
converted into living quar-
ters, while others .remain
empty.
Delicious re.fre,shments
were •served by.the.members
of the Ethel W.I. ladies. Many
• stopped to view the splendid
display of• "antiques" that
had been set. .up by . local
residents and W.I. members.
This was an excellent
collection, and included one
authentic , piece of Spence
Pottery made at one of the
two early potteries in the
vicinity. The display added
much to• the historic interest.
of the meeting.
