The. 'someone' could be someone who is interested in their projects like ME for in- stance, - of. the Signal -Star who had for your con- venience - set up a book which wasavailable to everyone; where , you could .check the date to see if two or three other groups were doing somethingon that same date. Well, the book has fallen by the wayside" since people would not send in their dates - and very few ever asked in advance if they had any opposition on their planned date. Consequently there have been a great many things that have had a badly divided audience and many people` wishing -there had been dif- ferent dates for these affairs so they could have attended them both. Organizations and Groups. note: A smart secretary will go out of her way to check on .• their project date and report back to her president. This gives them time to set a new date if they .have run into another groups project date. The smart thing to do now is to set a. date for your Bake Sale, - dazice or _ whatever, check with other groups re: their plans, then make your date known. The Bulletin Board is a great way to bring the item to the attention ofeveryone and really has helped a lot .in the last year or so. Once you have had people "MARK YOUR CALENDAR" you just have to keep reminding them of the date. Talk it up, really get out and sell tickets, if necessary, theft have an •ad in a con- spicuous. corner the week before your date.. I know. that I. have helped many groups have better attendance at their affairs thrti my DON'T FORGETS, because many of you have told me so. I am happy to help - if you will just_ make your plans known far enough • in advance. I• like. to know WHO is sponsor, WHERE and WHEN - precisely - it is being held; WHY it is important to ,you, • HOW you have been working for your project and if - IF - you appreciate the way your Signal -Star is •interested in lielping,YOU, Don't forget Saturday, October' :23 if you . Missed attending the Colborne Christmas. Fair last Wed- nesday. It is being held in Saltford hall - and I expect it will be bursting at the seams again as this is of great in- terest to everyone at this time of the year. GODERICH SIGNAL*STAR, THUG In '1969this little group . g of p Colborne ladies with ,their Arts and Crafts were finding that their . space in the Colborne Town Hall • at Carlow corner, was becoming cramped and crowds were larger each, year. So, they. decided to take, .over the ° whole building -'more or less - and have more space. This was fine for a. few years -but once again they were finding they needed more space and finally a couple of years ago. they set upat the large Saltford Hall across the River Maitland. Where will they go next— .iWill the Arena be ready or eeler reports usin Housing Action Committee Chairman D. F. Wheeler reported, to Goderich Town is Council on Thursday.evening through' a briefpresented in connection ' with the annual Association of • Ontario' Housing Authroities con- ference on housing. Mr. Wheeler said that the e" Minister of Housing set the, tone of the conference .in.his - opening address. The Minister ' told the meeting that Housing Authority ap- proaches to government subsidized housing had.: to change. ,,Tlje_building of the large autonomous projects of the past were not working out and by their nature were creating as many problems as they solved. . "Because they were large they tended to segregate the corn - triunity, from the c inhabitantso triunity, set them apart, in a sense ghettoize them," the minister said. . The meeting was told that Marina reports. average year During the past summer approximately 512 boats • stayed overnight at Goderich's municipal marina and at least twice that many refueled and continued on. their way. ` According to a report submitted to Goderich Town Council last , Thursday business at the marina this year was'for the most part on a par vvith'past years. A number of •suggestions, pointed out by visitors using themarina, were put before council A pump for diesel fuel was suggested as with the . in- creasing amount of small diesel craft the present yste'iiri of 'phoning -fora truck o come to the marina had roven inadequate. 'In connection with the wn's 150. anniversary next ear' it -was=; suggested- that .a_ ree taxi ride frofti the arina to the down town area e provided. It was also uggested that: the town onsor a sailboat race. . . The town was asked to onsider enlarging the ticking facilities. This was en as the one improvement at both visitors and resident aters had been concerned out..., .. . €onferencE what was needed was a new approach, one Which will integrate°this type of housing into the community rather, than set it apart. To • ac- complish this the . Govern- ments have made amend- ments to the housing act that will attract .substantially more private' funds into the housingmarket," he said. • The Minister also said that totally 'sponsored Govern; ment projects will be, located and designed to integrate into the'", communities official plans. Programs such as OHRP will enable citizensto improve their .ac- commodaations and rent geared to income schemes will enable people to obtain better accommodation or help them tb say in their Take a step in the right • direction. The conference .was-. also told that part -of the change. must take. ' place at the municipal level. Nb Ion er will a community get hots Ing just for the asking. It will have to get more involved with their own housing needs, they will be required to show need, help select suitable and desirable sites and ensure the proposed development will conform with local bylaws and official plans. • "What they seem to suggest," Mr. Wheeler told •council, "was .. that municipalities needed groups to : do exactly what our Housing- Action Committee has been setup to.do.' available for another year W1}en will we ever have an auditorium large enough ;to take care of things such as this. I hope this is not far away for I know Goderich is growing - inmore ways than one. Signs of progress are all' around us. Back .in 1969 the buildings on The Square - - West St. Corner to. the Craigie Building at Montreal. Street 'corner were' torn down and Gerrards Clothing Shop, Simpsons -Sears Office, the Offices of Niagara Finance and Realty Co.' with the fine, Bank of Nova` Scotia- filling the West Street corner, were erected. Before this big renovation things had. been moving also, as. the Guy Emerson Drug store had been where Mac Campbell is now On The Square. Guy moved Into the corner 'store at The Square and West S,t. wher'e,,,, now stands the lank` of Nova Scotia, Jeweller, . Reg Bell (not 'Reg' - Optometrist) . had moved to the store where Mr. Bricker now sell, fine glass and jewellery. Until '65 to 1969 there had not been too many. drastic changes - at least 'ones that meant building new buildings. The choice of design for the Gerrard's- Sears, etc. building on The Square was to many con- cerned citizens a poor one, since it does not blend, in any way with the general ar- chitecture of The Square. I can only hope the Town Council have made a ruling of some kind to prevent such > thing happening again. "The prettiest town in Canada" is quite a"slogan to live up to; so let's not lose the charm ofc a fine150 year old town. Community centres are -the heart.of the social:. cultural and recreational life of many places in — -Ontario. They have been built by people in the community whbtave contributed their money and their labour and they are one place that everyone can share equally. Unfortunately, not all these centres were builtto .tti.e same construction standards. Modern engineering studies have shown that some of them' contain dangerous flaws which must Ise corrected •. immediate) a Happily, Ontario is able totelp municipalities to do this with extra money from both the Community Recreation Centres Act and Wintario. in most cases, the people in the community need to raise only 25 per cent themselves:' Because we know some. arenas are too old or too costly to fix up, we are also ready to work out a plan to help mun cpalities:to bulld new ones. .
