Several Goderich and
District Pro . Life ,members' -.
heard Joanna Nash speak at
the F.E. Madill Secondary
School in Wingham on
Thursday, October 14 and the
topic was "Abortion as it is in
Britain".. •
Joanna is .a well known
British journalist, 23 .years
old. She is on British TV and
radio and a. councillor in the
London Borough of . S tt) .
Since 1972 Joanna- has tr-
active i,n the Society for the
Protection of ' ' Unborn .
Children (SPUC) • .
Since 1929 in Britain women
could get abortions for any
serious medical reason. i'he
law- was changed . in 1938
allowing more freedom in
granting abortions.
Withthe permissive society
in the '60's easier divorces
were granted, sex education
allowed in schools,:,
homosexuality became legal
and easier abortion seemed to
be part of a packagb deal. The
Bill -which was .presented to•.
thetBr%tish Parliament in 1966
was palled, "Medical Ter-
'mination-•--of Pregnancy".
Churclies -were totally con-
fused, •no-one•really. knew
what it meant, with the result.
that there was very little
opposition to the Bill, ac-
cording to Ms. Nash.. .
Abortions can be' per
formed in Britain for four
different reasons. The
signatures of two doctors are
r quired and abortions can be
•performed up to seven
months. The vast majority
are done on un -married girls
for'social reasons.
All :hospitals do abortions. ,.
Doctors opposed to abortion
-do' not specialize in
Gynecology and Obstetrics, .
she said.
For the same reason many
young •girls do not choose
nursing as a career. This has.
the bad effect of leaving these
services in the hands of .hard
core, pro abortion personnel:;
the group was told. ,.
The Pro 'Life groups:, are -
getting quite strong. In 1975;.
100.x000,. Pro - Life - people.
marched in silence in London,
each carrying a symbolic
white flower. •This was the
largest demonstration, in•;
Britain since World War Two.
The Pro -abortion group is
really very small; Joanna
said, "but the law is there and - -
must be changed."
Young people do not like the.
law. They feel pushed into a
society that someone thinks is
good for them. Because
abortion is . a "right'', un-
tnarri.ed . mothers feel
pressured into something that
she must do._ .. Women who
already have a large family
feel 'it is a duty to have an
abortion and doctors are
under pressure to carry out
the taw, Ms. Nash note
A new breed of children are -
growing up; Miss Nash said.
They are glad to be alive and
use as their slogan "Don't
Waste Our Babies'".
