Carl Zinkan, president of Zehr's said - Wednesday morning that the opening date will be kept, adding that the construction, firm building the/store has not failed yet to meet a deadline, The president said that the new store'. would_ offer customers in ' the Goderich areaa complete . line ; of bakery products baked fresh „daily in the store. He said ,the in-store bakery was a recent addition to the Zehr's chain and that in the last four stores .opened it bad been very successful. • Mr. Zinkan said that 'the store's management • . per- sonnel would be transferred to Goderich from established stores but added that about 50 employees were_ hired in town to meet the store's full and part time staff needs: Mr. Zinkan said he did not want to attempt to offer Goderich food customers any idealsbut--would rather let thorn .come to the store and decide for themselves if they enjoyed shopping there. He• said -the -firm had stressed °establish'ing a warm - at- mosphere to the store to try CO prevent the sterile -type of shopping some outlets have. He pointed out that the ' success of the effort could only be measured '`in the acceptance of- the store by Goderich area customers. ' Mc6-ee'-s- Show-ro-om HAMILTON STREET TheMinistry of Tran- •sportation advised the Goderich Airport Committee that it was not necessary to purchase a jet screen for; use at theeast end of the runway at Highway 21., ° •', George Lloyd, ' regional • superintendent of airways with MOT, informed board member Dick Wright that a jet 'screen was unnecessary since no .aircraft should be using the runway extensions for run -ups or extending their take off runs andshould only be used as an emergency overshoot area on landing. The '' committee in- vestigated the 'possibility of erecting a jet • screen following an accident •on. Highway ' 21 in ' which • a motorist had his car -windows shattered from the force of a jet preparing for takeoff. If a pilot uses the runway extensions for run -ups or extended take off distance near the fence, the pilot would 'be responsible for any damage providing the ex- tensions have been properly marked as• required by the .MOT. "It is necessary to post appropriate signs advising pilots not to proceed beyond certain points for run -ups and take offs. The runway 4,„extensions have . now been - marked in accordance .with :the MOT specifications •:and any • damage caused by .takeoff becomes the responsibility of the pilot. - The committee also passed a motion to recommend to council to enter into an agreement with Imperial Oil subject to mutual agreement of the installation of facilities and proper insurance coverage protecting the municipality. The. agreements are for equip- ment loan from the company and an aviation fueldealer agreement with Esso. The agreements are for the. new installation of ,pumps to broaden the service of fuel dispensing. A dual line and turbo pump have already been installed. The- price. of 80:87 fuel has been hiked to 85 cents per galloon and jet fuel and 100-130 will also be available. - In othe.r_.airport business it Was agreed to post signs around : the airport pex1 peters and particularly the east and west ends prohibiting unauthorized entry. • It was noted -that several people have been observed .on. and . around the runways that could pose a „safety hazard. In speaking to that letter, ,.Deputy -reeve Bill Clifford said he' and Councillor Elsa Haydon hadmet with two representatives of Transport Canada who had advised •them, the 60:foot.strip should have been in the. lease because it was "strictly for recreational purposes". He suggested that; •Mr, Sovie be advised to apply to the government of Canada concerning his plans to, build on trat property, adding council had no objectionsto his plans•. The matter was tabled •at• that meeting .however, 'to. allow time for an official letter . to arrive from Tran- sport Canada It arrived Mast Friday. In this 'letter, F.C. Scan: tlebury wrote, "At no • time was it .the Department's intention to relinquish ad- ministration and control. over .the :'working• area' of the harbor.
