Ed Steegstra isn't one to let
little things bother him. The
fattlhat he is a parapalegic
and—is paralyzed from the—
chest -
he»chest- down he admits has
changed his life • but it -hasn't,
kept him from doing most of
the things he wants to do.
Ed was in a car accident
about two years ago and
suffered severed spinal'
cord that left him paralyzed.

the car so I could get around
myself," said Ed. -
His father: sold the family
farm after the accident since

work he could doto help out
on the place.. They moved to
Goderich and -Ed . began to
alter his life style to over-
come his handicap.

life, Ed refused to accept the
fact that his wheelchair
would keep hire from hunting
and fishing. He recalled.

was an all -terrain vehicle. He

Lucknow girl- wins
at Toronto show
Brenda Taylor, 16 year old
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken
Taylor, RR3 Lucknow., placed
first in the open junior rider
competition at the 1976 all
Arabian horse Show held over
the weekend. at the CNE
coliseum in Toronto.
- Riding a four year old grey
purebred Arabian mare, Am
Joves Spitfire, she also
picked up a third in Junior
English Equitation on „the
flat, fifth in Purebred English •
Pleasure Hack and a fifth in
Junior Water.:Steady Hands.
Brenda had personally
broken .anti trained the mare.
She is one of the top junior
riders in the area, competing
allitr all of the local horse shows,
as well.as being a member of
the Huron -Bruce pony club, •
She recently was awarded the
Santa CIaus Parade. '76.

The machine he bought was
ideal for his needs but its age
caught up with it and it; was
not ., dependable . enough, . for
Ed. He bought a brand new
one and since then has been.
fishing and hunting the same
as he did before the accident.
He used :his :machine
recently to take advantage of
the.: trout spawning season
_and caught the second biggest,.
fish of his life, a 37 inch, 20
pound, three' ounce rainbow
trout, He hooked the fish
using an alligator Jure and
foughlandint g itit. for two hours before
"I was in the river near the
Highway '21 bridge' when I
hooked it and it towed .me
downstream about a quarter,
of a mile before giving up,"
said Ed holding his catch. "I
think Ii ll stuff it rather than
eat it." ti. His success as a fisherman
helps hirn in his mental fight
against his handicap. He
claims his accident didn't
limit his lifestyle but con-
cedes that when he goes to -a
party or night club and sees
people, dancing he gets
depressed.
"But dancing isn't really
important," he adds quickly.
Ed has 'accepted his
problem and would like
people he meets • to do the,
same, He says he would
rather have ,people .come up
to him:and discuss his han-
dicap than meet him and not
