(continued from page 4) • • testate;:, -•educe the whole .sad ,xn,ess into a strictly- English; versus Frencleaffair. The present arrogance of the Canadian Air Line Pilot's Association, that only English should be used at•airports in Canada,. is caused by the 'unjust and privileged position which English assumed abroad, as a result of British and .American domination of ..-? - the aircraft industry. Britain and America led the way in a' 'aviation technology. It was therefore inevitable that they woad assume that English ..sholld_:be the "international language- of aviation." Recent bumper stickers .have proclaimed this fact - proof. positive that the issue in- volves a large portion of English arrogance imported from the international scene. The International Civil Aviation Organization deserves full blame for giving English a'' privileged and totally intolerable supremacy in the air. In the early stages of aviation ex- pansion, " the British and Americans imported their own controllers' intoforeign airports -where landing rights were obtained in non-English ureas. •It was just an ex- tension of this defacto situation, when English was - named as the language to be used. between foreigners, during landing procedures. The wrath and anger against the unjust use of English has been mitigated by the ; fact, that to elevate French or some other national language to take the place already held by English, instead of solving the problem, would only give unequal advantage to another national language. The only just and workable solution to the problem is • to strip English of its privileged position, and replace it with a language equally 'acceptable to all, the world auxiliary language, Esperanto. Anglophones dispart.ge other languages because of -- the the position English has assumed as a consequence of western, technology. We should remember, however, that only ten percent of the World population' speak English The issue of` air safety, as -presented by CALPA, is dishonest. Traditionally, around the world, natianais speak in their own native tongues for landing procedures. A Pole speaks in Polish when landing in Warsaw, and a German, in German,' when landing in 'Berlin - certainly not in. English.. To extend the right to French C--anadians to speak in French when landing in Quebec, is simply . to extend the right, recognized in- ternational.ly, to speak one's own official language when landing on home territory. That has . been considered safe for decades, so why pretend that safety is at stake now. John Condit wrote in the July issue of Macleans, "Beneath all the pious talk of 'keeping the airways safe' is a simple case of racism.:-' . • The real danger at large. airports' exists precisely because English is used between foreign' pilots and controllers. Tragedies have already occurred because of a variety of pigeon .English syllables mispronounced by Japanese,, Portuguese. and - other pilots while landing. English is not 'tilted for. in- ternational us at airports and creates h• arils. It is not ,. phonetic and is difficult to learn. The wi rld, as well• as the. Canadian problem could ` be . solved and safety achieved, only by adopting Esperanto as the language of aviation. Dr. Margaret Mead, in , an" 'article for. the MAINLINER 'of Los Angeles wrote, "A second language wpuld have to be introduced simultaneously all over •the ' world - perhaps by satellite but especially in airports, on Wines, and in all in-, terhational • - con- rnunications." What Mrs. Vanden Broeck was referring to, .however, terested in this reading ad- venture. Her "thrust" was a little different: The newspaper didn't interest her much. In truth, it still doesn't. But she had books- nursery rhymes and fairy tales and monthly publications like Children's Digest which held her spellbound for hours. She enjoyed -when someone read to her, but she, aiso enjoyed the times when she couldread out loud for the whole family. She wasn't very old when she had Jack and the Bean Stalk memorized and could quickly recognized when someone skipped a line or missed a was what fig termed. .as remedial reading for students with learning disabilities. Itis here, according to Mrs. Vanden Broeck, that the real problems surface. She questioned whether 'students were being referred to remedial reading classes without". having a more serious , learning disability than perhaps not having had sufficient . instruction and assistance: in the regular classroom situations She suggested that remedial . reading classes . were un- necessarily over -crowded word. *because regular classroom As the youngest child came along, Sesame- Street was a household phrase. This fun learning experience, was augmented with "the usual. books and•educational tools. Reading seemed to be a -natural outcome of it. all and the learning process was in gear. In short,• the school plays only part of the role when reading is learned. The home is such an important factor in so many :ways that some teachers weren't doing their job! In fact, Mrs, Vanden Broeck asked, ."Is . it not. reasogable for us to expect a high level efficiency in the regular, classroom • and specialized help for those who need it?" - r!' "Are you paying teachers simply on the basis ,of their own education or on the basis of their ability to teach?" la" Mrs. Vanden Broeek asked the board. Those are loaded questions, . questions' which must give teachers: all over Huron .County: pause to consider. Theyare questions which in all likelihood, .many teachers have asked themselves over fl the years. It will be interesting to see'I what the Education Com- • ii people would perhaps be • nilttee of the Huron County Board of Education has to say about:this - if the committee says anything at all. Each ;chemical, on its own . -and about 300 combinations of chemicals, two at a time; were. field-tested - in traps. About 70 species of moths, were attracted to some 'degree. Edward Swailes and Charles Lilly, entomologists at the Research Station, were - involved with the fieldtesting of the chemicals. • More field testing resulted in the development of precise ratios and combinations of various chemicals that are good attractants for 'five species of moth. The species - are mainly of. the cutworm family which - can • ' cause great damage'to a :cultural crops. , "The work has caused particular' problems in chemistry," Dr. Struble says. "Male' moths can detect very small amounts -- only a few molecules -- of the chemicals. The quantity they respond to 'it so minute that' it is difficult to detect.even with our best instruments:" Work is continuing at the station to develop more sex -attractants to predict populations of other destructive insects. It means farmers may be able to use fewer c,hemicals in the ' future: They have automatically sprayed 'for certain cutworm species, not risking the financial loss of an infestation,.
