word::
The dictionary defines it as
'desiring and expecting with
v , some confidence.' °
Generations of people have
lived• by hopb. Armies. have
Marched in ' the hope of
winning.,the .upcoming battle;.
Countless souls have groped.
through the dark tunnels of
their '•-lives hoping, against
hope there was a light at the
other end leading them out of
their despair.
Centuries before the birth
of Christ, Pliny the Younger
wrote .that hope is the pillar
that ' holds up the , world.
Martin Luther sledthat
everything that is done in this
world isdone. by hope.
- Everygne, no matter what
their age, needs hope. Young
people need hope to reach a
desirable goal. That goal may
be ' knowledge, mastering •
" skills, ..recovering from an
Illness, gaining self
assurance and so forth. As for
.
p
old
peo le, whatever their
,bodies may tell them, hope
' keeps .them getting up each
day and facing the sunrise. '
Did.you know that following
World War II it was. learned
that ,prisoners of war who
kept' on hoping that freedom
would come for them,..who
were sure they would come
..rout alive .came through their
• •ordeal.: "with much less her-
-Mini effects than those who

htz'this nuclear and:
materialistic age; w`e all have
. many hopes. We hope for
peace and -harmony.: Some
people hope :for wealth and
right now there ?is. a great
surge to buy lottery li'ckets in
the hope- ,of becoming an
instant millionaire .f
Perhaps because ; life Is '-
uncertain and all too short we
clutch, as the German
preacher. Helmut Thielicke
has said, t , at: the passing
moment and put our hopes in
money and: goodeand those
we love. However,how often
we find those hopes dashed.' '
reme.inber.so well a young
man. telling Me 'about the.
early days of his marriage.
"We didn't have a washing
machine," Lie recalled, "so
we trudged. every week to the
Iaundroji iat• We hoped for the.
clay we could' afford our own
machine for we knew we
Would be much happier then.
Well., we finally saved enough
for the washer and for awhile-
*, was the delight of our lives.
But then as we got used' to it
we'started to hope for, the day
when we could afford some
really good furniture., We got
that in a few' years too, and
we began to realize we would
be much happier if: we hada
television set so:- we set our
hopes on .that , .Having
acquired a TV, we decided we
wouldbe happier stillif we
had a second car. As the -
years . Went. 'on. we '.:acquired
more and more things until
one day my wife and 1 sat
downfora good honest talk.
Somewhat to our dismay, we
both confessed we weren't as
happy aswe were back in
those days when we trudged
ever.yy week , to the laun-
tdroxnat!1 ,.•
Yes, hope in material
things usually lets us down.
"Keep on hoping that the
clouds will break" is the line
of an old song, but the hope in
that song is :a pretty wishy-
washy affaircompared to the
:great hope St. Paul shouts;,.
about in the New Testament,
This great hope -he extolsand
builds his life on is the hope
based on his belief -in ,God"
because of what He has done,
is doing and Will do through.
His son, Jesus Christ.
Paul's hope, and- so. should
that of ,ever.y, Christian, is so
strong he is able to face any
condition; good orbad;
trusting completely ,that
God's hand will never let goof
the .anchor that keeps his life
Steady and calm and sure
even' ..through :the stormy
seas. As he tells the Hebrews
his faith ';in God gives sub-
stance to his hopes. • '
Yes, Hope is , a. word that
gives power to your life but
especially *hen it is built on a
deep and abiding faith in the
goodness of God. • -

"REV. RON MATHESON"
COME TO WORSHIP . DEPART TO SERVE;
'Ong of the. greatest prophecies of
Scripture is found in Psalm -110, where
David wrote: "The Lord said unto my
Lord SitThou hqu at My right hand until I
make thine enemies Thy footstool,
In :Matthew 22:41:46 our' Lord ex-
plained that this was a prophecy about
-Himself, David's Son and Lord.. Men
Might hate Him and cry "Away with
Him!".They might nail Hini to a' tree
and laugh and sneer at, •Him;'but- God
the Father, would respond by 'saying:
"Here, come sit at My right hand until
I make Your enemies Your footstool.
We should never forget that, accord-
ing to Bible prophecy, God's -response
to'itian's7.J&cti'on of Christ was to be
judgment and wrath. In Psalm Y2 the
question is asked; why the nations
rage and the .:peop'le imagine a vain
thing — that they•can get along with-
out the One whom God has anointed to....
be King, The Psalm depicts God laugh-
ing at their attempts toythwart His Our
-
poses and predicts that "the Lord
shall have them • in derision" and
"speak unto them.in His wrath." -
At. Pentecost al I ':was•; ready for the
judgment to fall. Christ had been cru=
cified and•"the last days" had begun •''`'
as Peter declared' in Acts .2:16,17;
quoting 'from the prophet' Jo41' But .
strangely, while some of Joel s proph-
ec9 was fulfi fled; or began •t'o bif4u1
filled at that time, the rest of it was
.not, for God did not—and has not yet—'
sent -the prophesied judgment: . •
Thank God. in infinite:grace He in-.
terrupted the prophetic program, de-.
'eyed'th'e'iemainder of its fulfillment
and revealed to the .Apostle Paul His
secret purpose to' offer to His enemies'
everywhere salvation and reconcilie-.
tion by free grace, through faith in the
crucified, risen'Savior. •
In •his,''Ephesian :letter the apostle y
asks -whether they, have heard of "the..
dispensation of the grace •of 'God,
which is.•given' me to you -ward; how
that by revelation He made known un-
to me the mystery" (Ephesians 3:1-3)•.
Now, thank God, His 'eternal purpose .
in.Christ is no longer a secret. While'
the day of grace lasts we may be•
"•justified,freely by His grace, through
the redemption that isin Christ Jesus"
(Romans 3:24). '
