Four or five 'members of the association serve as guides for the dayand faith= fully wait in the park for their ° parttime woodsmen to show up. Sunday ,dawned cold and ' rainy and association .vice- president Bill Wisser seriously considered .calling off the hikes due ,, to :the weather., But Mother ' Nattfrey came through and the sun appeared. warming up the air and ap- parently the • hikers' en- thusiasm. The first' group to take to the woods.was.a party of nine. Bill Wisser led the way as a man, his wife and two children, a Young. couple from Toronto and two young ladies from Blyth trudged, off along the banks .of the Maitland River. Barely .off ,on the adventure Bill Wisser began• to answer questions from the hikers. Most of .the questions con- cerned the speed at which the' group would travel on the hike and hdw: often 'Mr.' Wisser goes hiking himself. The guide said that the. speed depended , on the camfort'of the hikers. He said the association members who serve as guides like to watch their charges closely to determine their ability and physical conditioning _and then set the pace accordingly. He added that he, goes on hikes whenever possible and that earlier this morning he had already completed the hike the party rias headed out on;. .:: Not concerned by, the ap- parent. ease with which Mr. Wisser appeared to be stepping off the,,; route, the group entered thebush determined, to .relive their younger days when as children they spent hours. playing in the woods. -Their spirits were buoyed • somewhat by the sight of .a fisherman braving the fall temperatures by ..standing. barefoot with his pants roiled up knee-deep in water casting for. cohoe salmon, '- The first quarter mile of the two. mile route was a :breeze for the group. N.ot knowing what to expect they all assumed the hike would be a Snap if the terrain was all like thefirst portion. The land was flat and the trail smooth .and the hikers felt it no different 'than walking along. a road. But that was soon to change. The . lead hikers' were the two • little giirls,.. they som slowed the pace e at when they met some of the 'obstacles.
