eferees
Referees in this area will
not be allowed to officiate at
any hockey games this"winter
unless they attend a referee
clinic, according to Hugh
Hodges, of Clinton past
president of the WOAA.
This year as in the past, the
WOAA is co-ordi,pating the
referee clinics in tiffs 'area in
accordance with the- stan-
dards developed by the•CAHA
and known as the National
Referee's Certification
Program. . •
The.'. training program for
all . referees in Canada has
been broken down into six
levels which are: levee one,
new referees„ and house
league; level .two, com-
petitive minor hockey; level
three, rt iior hockey play-offs
and lines:Ilan 'in -Junior "B",
t`C and "D" games; level
four, referee, Tr: "B "., "C"
and "D", linesm n -Jr,
and Sr , "A";.• level five,
referee Jr. "A", Int. "A", Sr.
"A" and level six, national
championships and IHF
competitions.
u • The foregding i's, a brief
outline of levels' of Ac-
creditation. As this program
has been implemented on a
national basis,'. it is and has
leen one of the best things
that could happen in
upgrading and qualifying
officials in amateur• hockey,
touchdown, . 'which ovas"
followed by a two-point
conversion pass from Walters
to M,ark Frayne.
Defensively, the .Vikings
shut• off Listowel both on the
ground and in the air, led by'
an outstanding effort from
Grant Shelton, who suc-
cessfully diagnosed :at
. tempted screens and reverses •
by_ Listowel throughout the
ga roe.'
, Offensively, the Vikings
moved the ball well with the
outside running • of Tom
O'Keefe, but had trouble with
their inside running game.
Coach Donnelly attributed
this problem to poor blocking
by his offensive line which he
feels must improve.
The Vikings' passing game
was • effective, with quar-
terback Walters completing
12 of 13 attempts and
throwing . four. todchdown
passes.. Offensive coach
George ' Young desc'ribed
Walters' play selection as
"excellent" and commented
on the steady improvement-
shown by—the Vikings signor
caller over last season and
the early part of this one. •
Mr. Hodges aid.
"There are faults in any
new system and naturally
there. are those who reject
and condemn the program,"
said Mr. Hodges.. "However
I'm 'reasonably certain it is
because thisendeavour is not
fully understood," he said. :
In ail circumstances for all
clinics, pre -registration is
mandatory coupled with the
prerequisites established for
progression into the next
higher level.
