•'er, folks! Goderich United
won. their last game of the
season against, our"arch-
rivals", Clinton S.C. by a
score of -3-zip, Talk about your
blankity-blanks ! ! From • the
word "go" it Vas an •un-
conventional and ."verrrry
interesting". gaffe!
Goderich came onto the
.field with cool confidence; :a'
definite contrast to the
lacklustre" entrance of the
opposition. (Sounds catty, but
honest, people they ;weren't
exactly , bouncing ° onto the
turf !-!) United was bound and
bent tftat they would be the
team sending. out : the
challenges. and once they
established this fact, it was
merely a matter of standing
firmly by this decision. . .
It. was a no -contest match
because_ them wasn't
anything Clinton could try
that Would make United
waver. • Goderich had corrr-
plete control 'of the balland
the play was shaped to. their
style and versatility... The
defence held strong' and made
inroads into Clinton territory,
which was never regained by
the oppositian.-Every inch.of
ground mattered and both
teams. . fought fiercely
('fought' is a particularly apt
term!). •
This first half was fast-
paced and packed with action
and suspense. -Attemppswere
repeatedly made by .Clinton•
to break through Goderich
lines but the defense stood
firmly; entrenched! They
completely nullified every
move from the opposition's
forward line. In 'ifie.'mean-
time, the other half of the
United brotherhood was busy .
moving into the Clinton zone
and took aim on their" goal
with .unremitting zeal until
eventually midway through
this period, Tony "the Blond
Menace." ,: Mennen „ slammed
in a secure shot which put
United on the boa rdst--
The action continued with
much excitement and hair-
raising.hijineks until the half-
time wh stle. Further. plots
and plans were laid to insure
a successful season's -end
game and when Goderich
trotted back onto the turf they
were fired -up and •full of
steam!
They continued to block the
opposition's 'advances and
efforts to gain 'ground.
Shortly ' .into this half,
Goderich had an opportunity
to send the ball into the net. .
and in she went with the ef-
forts of Harold "the Big H"
Refflinghaus and • the
exuberant aid of ' a Clinton
man! (His name, not given for
obvious reasons!:!).
The fans went slightly wild
over this and the sounds of
happiness took awhile to die
down. After .this episode,
Clinton took the bull by the
horns and didn't hesitate for a
fraction of time to try to make
*United look bad and achieve
some much-needed points for
themselves.' But deep inside,
they knew it was over, for
they had: never had control of
th'e ,play and they certainly
lost control of themselves and •
their actions. .
The play became
outrageous and- audacious.
There wasn't a'• trick untried
