Where's the GMHA House league gone? The Goderich. Minor Hockey Association executive is back to working overtime trying to ensure that as many, youngsters as possible have a Chance to play . organized hockey this winter. The executive is now trying to find a place for about 50 bantam and pee wee players to play after 3 poor •registration in the two age levels for- the'T9°76-77 season. • GMHA' president 'Don. Elliott said., he was negotiating with the Clinton Minor Hockey Association to -try to work out . a two .town. house • league system to give the 50 Goderich boys some place to play. He said that about 22 pee wee players and 30 bantams were left after the two level All-Star teams were formed explaining that the numbers meant that only two teams could be formed at. each level for any house league competition.. "There's no Fay you can have the s two teams playing each' other every week," he said. The travelling time to the arena has been blamed for the poor turnout: of pee wee and bantam house league players. The executive were expecting about 225 players to register allowing them to form two All-Star teams and Operate a four or five team house league in each division: depending on the number.... . "House -league parents are used to driving their kids to the arenaor, letting them walk down I guess," said the president. "They just aren't interested in driving to , Clinton;" ,. • The poor registration is not. restricted to' Goderich alone. Mr. Elliott said.that'he talked with executive members. of minor hockey associations in several communities that •, have had their arenas 'closed and • said that out of town arrangements for hockey has not been accepted by parents: The system • being in- vestigated by the executive would . have the Goderich house league teams playing in the same; league as the G1-i-n-ton--clubs-t-heh. age., The Clinton executi'Ue. are 'not opposedto the idea but say they have to wait to see what their own registration is before • they commit them- selves to -allowing Goderich youngsters to play. The second ' registration for Clinton minor hockey is this weekend and Mr. Elliott said he expects to know early next week what the outcome will be. The executive has other alternatives open to them, none of theca attractive. ac- cording •toMr. Elliott. He said the ' executive could try to form a secpnd all-star squad using the house league players available• .now but pointed out that the players are younger' ones that haven't had the opportunity. -to 'play enough to challenge at an all- star . team level and would' probably have a shortened 'season that would • not get them to the playoffs. He . added -however that at least some of theca would get to play. Tat seems to be the drawback in that alternative. According to OMHA rules•• only .25 players can be signed for an all-star team and of that only 17' can be dressed for a game. That would mean that at least five pee wees would miss each game they played and that five bantam players woUl'd have to be told they can't play at all .and given their money back. A second alternative suggested is to pit all 50 players together into one we gat an idea .for -,you! The suggestion was to make line changes,' manadatory. so that only pee' • wee players from both clubs would be on together and the same for 'bantams. By ,doing this :a' g pee wee 'wqu.ld not be playing against a bantam player older and bigger and would not be in • danger of injury because -of the size difference. The third alternative now confronting the executive is to simply return. . the registration money paid by the players thus' far and cancel this , year's house league. That may be the final straw the executive pulls, but according to Mr. Elliott' it is one they will pull only when all else. fails. , "I'll know more next `week when Clinton has their final registration," he said, "The executive 'is confident some arrangement can be Made to allow these boys to play."
