The Goderich Recreation,
and Community Centre.
Board wants to be ready for
the dayo-when their arena is
back in commission .and is
planning to rehire staff for
the building for a possible.
mid-December ice making
date. The Board hashed out
its hiring plans at their last
meeting and decided to try to
have a recommendation for
assistant arena manager for
their 'October meeting.
The recommendation will
be made by the arena com-
mittee
who will advertise the
position, interview applicants
and suggest a -person for the
board to decide .on. The need

shortly after the closing of the
Goderich Memorial Arena
when assistant manager
Harold Leddy and staffer Jim •
Fraser re-signed their posts.
The task of finding an.
assistant for manager Bill
Lumby was brought up. by
board member' John Doherty
w.ho suggested that the
committee should be giving
their employees a call. ti?
' -advise them of the date they
should return •to • work. Mr.
Doherty .advised that the
committee should give Jim
Fraser a call to make sure he
knows when he is to return.
Bob. Allen balked at the"idea
of calling the former staffer
pointing out that _hie board
doesn't have any employees
--at-the-arena.
"They` resigned," he said,
ana
"We really, have to advertise
the position.
• Jim' Peters said there was
no need to advertise or hire
now since .there is no work at
the arena and no ice. He said
the arena would be °closed
until mid February at the
earliest' according to _. the
engineer's report, and that.
the •board couldn't justify two
employees for the arena when
there is no arena open.
"The. :builders said they
don't want ice," said. Mr.'
Peters,
Bob Allen pointed out that
no contract has been let on
'the arena reconstruction and
that there were no builders to
---deters.
predicted reopening ."of - the
arena ' ' according ' to'
the
consulting engineers, .C.C.,
Parker and Associates, was
the middle of February if
construction started
November' 1. He said the
February date was for the.
return of ice and that the
completion of the entirejob
was predicted for the
beginning of March. •
Bill' Lumby said if -wor'C on
the npsf is' completed, by
December. there. - is . a
possibility ice could be put in
without' interfering • with •
construction. He added that if
the arena is suitable .for an,
opening arid the town hasn't
prepared , for that 'day per-
sonnel -wise, there will be "a
tot. of screaming if it isn't
opened".
„ Dr. Peters asked what the

er
. duties of the second employee
were -going to ' be if the
December .. opening date
wasnrt met. He said the board
Will have to justify the person
and with no arena and no job,
that justification may be
difficult.
The arena manager Said
there is lots of work to do on
the building without worrying
about putting ice in. He said.
the building would have to be
cleaned 'up and there .would"'
be painting to do preparing
for the day when construction •
was finished. ° -
"What are we hiring? A °
painter . or. an assistant
manager? • asked Dr.
"It ' doesn't • matter what
AP title .. you use," said the
.manager.. "We need a man
down there 'and I don't care
what you call him.".
Mayor Deb Shewfelt said
that the committee should be
prepared to open the arena as
- soon as possible ..and
'suggested „' a December
starting -date for the assistant
manager to ''keep the com-
mittee from getting "egg 'on
its face''.--— - . . - -
Bob Allen then • recor'n-r
mended that thea'cena''
committee be given the
power toadvertise the
position of assistant manager
for the arena beginning in
December and that the
committee members have a
person to recommend to the •
committee for its -October`
meeting.
