Green TAumbers
Hear of drying, methods
On,Thursday night an eager
: group of boys and girls
gathered, at .Victoria School
for the Green Thumber`s .first
fall meeting. Roll call opened
the meeting : w,ith. 31
youngsters ` answering with
the name of a flower . that
grew well in their garden.
Darin • Culbert and -his
md her; Mrs. Jean Culbert,
made a picture out of dried
flowers which were gathered
from. Darin's garden. They
—also -did- a : *ied-- flower'
arrangement An a glass
--container. •'
Mrs. Barnett introduced
• the guest speaker Mrs.. D.
'Moorehead who has been '•a
big help to the club this year.
She helped judge the flower
show and was involved in
judging the flower garden's,
for the garden contest.
She told the children two
different ways of drying
flowers. Air :drying is the
most common Way to do
weeds and • everlasting
flowers. Pick weeds •or
flowers, invert them, tie them
and hang them in a dark dry
place: • ,
One thing to remember
when doing this is not to let
any seeds fall near the flower
garden because the'garden
would be full of ' them next
year -if any did get - in the
flower beds, she explained.
Doc gathered early in the
--ye.ar and-- dried :makes• --.a
lovely background for an
arrangement;. she said., Milk
weeds pods are also good' to
dry _ and "five of them put
together •can. make a 'lovely
poinsettia. Tessel, Poppy
Pods, Joe Pie. and: Queen
• Anne's Lace are very good to
air. dry. Touch them up with
ternpra paints for a bit of
colour.
.. Mrs. Moorehead said that
oneshould gather anything at
all that looks. interesting,
eventually they will come .in
handy when snaking a dried
arrangement. •
The second Way to dry
flowers is in silica jell. This
method is very expensive so it;'__
isnot used as much as the air
drying method. • We, very k'
much enjoyed her demon-
stration and really -appreciate
her coming out and telling us
all this valuable information.
on dried flowers and weeds.
The members have planned
a trip -on Saturdartcr collect
some of their own.. -
A'bus trip has been planned;
as well for Saturday, Sep •
-
tember 25 .when the group are
going to Guelph. All ' in-
terested' are to meet at•
Victoria School at 8:30'.
Saturday morning.
The 'children . were also
given tickets •to sell. They '
have agreed to donate the
proceeds to the arena roof
fund. .
