SEPTEMBER 2;4976" ROUND AND ABOUT WITH MARTHA Have you ever wondered what .happens. at some of. these trailer. camps that have ople dashi- every weekend? .T haven't seen too `many, but this. .weekend 1 met, up 'with a 41101. eye -Opener, Two. young m 'n and their wives take oar e -of -this -.happy; snug' valley cats h' h 't ' k d away `very nieiy from the prying world. This isa family camp and actually it is the. kids who:. bring the "folks back. every It we ke-nrd Passible. Norse but families who are real people, love the 'outdoors, the other campers and the life that goes' with all this, need enter, • Fun is , planned for the p which is uc a ch ildre,,rt _ as well •. as the . . ' grownups = but as usual both groups usually take over and a. wonderful time is had by all, - T'his being a long -Weekend and the last of the season, a corn roast and music is planned and the whole .Camp turnsout, of course, for the singing, eating and chatter: The. corn was excellent: Somehow it tasted So much better since it had,the place of • honor for the evening right in the centre of the affair, boiling merrily in the biggest iron kettle. you've seen in many years. (1 hear the kettle was full of petunias and other flowers earlier that day!) The fare under the kettle ' was beautiful. It lit up the whole scene. • . Folks had their lawn chairs forming a huge circle three • and four deep around the POT and three - four - sometimes more, gui.tar and banjo players were the live wires.of the circle keeping the singing and; laughter at a great peak; Stompin' Tom had nothing on these fellows. How they can, remember all the words to so many ballads is beyond me but of course they are young and sharp. and enjoy sharing their music with. everyone.. "Country' • music from the latest hits to the old tear jerke -s was the theme for the night -and' the night: went on and merrily on. The children had their own circle, .with their own music, a place to dance which they did - and they.stayed away from'ahe •grownup party in droves. • . I had no idea such a happy camping grounds could be so, close to home I remember. many great sing -songs ,of .years ago that took only a nucleus of six peopteadd"a,gui . .. a crowd in a ver .short time. Everyone knows an invitation to a pleasant evening 'when they hear one and you'd be surprised to hear of the folks who will walk a mile to be one of such.a happy group.. What a shame 'so many people think such parties are just drinking parties. In my estimation they are the ones --w.laa sroil-and.bre k--u-p--U• s sessions. "No good harmony. was ever heard from a . bunch 'of drunks. You have • to have -y-our-wits about you and a clear . mind to... -really erg joy such a camp fire - one you can recall happily in the wintry months ahead. This is what makes .family camping something that the children will grow up .,to respect and love and later take their own children to a "Happy Valley" After. not having been around camp fires for quite a few years, I was happily surprised to meet. "young .men grown up" who"had attended our happy sing -song. . groups of many.' y.ears.. ago, These fellows, with . their lovely 'wives and children, told me they wouldn't miss the family camp fires for the world and I secretly 'said "Thank God for such fin -.young.people ': • Sometimes I, wonder if -those old , camp fires may have'contrrbuted in some way to the bright ones of today?. ,I'll never know ! . • One bright spot • of the evening - I wondered about.a • huge cloth sign 'hanging nearby 'which said in'huge • black letters "Happy Bir- tlday, Dianne"; Ther ,sign would blow out in the breeze. like a sheet.or a sailboat. On looking. closer.' found it WAS a.shel't-.a fitted.bottom sheet for a .bed that someone had taken off Dianne's- .bed„ Everyone in the•camppaid a quarter to autograph this sheet - and Urn sure Dianne will be able to buy a couple to replace it. It was good for a big laugh and everyone en- joyed •'singing •"Happy Bir- thday'".
