Ontario Hydro announced
this week that '.it expects
Bruce Generating Station A's
second unit to begin.
producing its first electricity
this •week to bested into' the
Ontario power grid.
Unit II is the first unit of the_.

BWPD information officer_

the exact time -is not known.. ' •
the ones:at Bruce.` GSA. Unit 6
. will be -started up in October'

in April `:85 and Unit 8 in
January •86. -
Bruce GSB will, be located.
to the lsouthpfBrtice GSA and
Douglas Point.
At the present time 'there
are approximately 7600
• em-ployees working at the
complex. , However, the
starting of the new project
wilt not appreciably affect the.
ntanp'owef forecast that was
issued -by Hydro in February
of this year: • •
The 'forecast, was
Calculated to take into' ac-
count the building of ,Bruce
GSB. Some of the con
strtiction .'staff that ais now
working at the site. will in all
likelihoodbe tran'sferred to
the new project, but not all of.,
The unit has been up to two ° -
.per cent power during the last.
week. • .
Meanwhile work will begin,
early this month on site
preparation' for Bruce GSB,
which will be essentially a
twin of: Bruce GSA: The rest of this year and
-most of next will -be spent on:
site clearing,, constructiO:of
a dyke and excavation.
This is actually a•late-start
for . the plant ' which was
originally scheduled to go into
operation between the years
' 1982 and 1985. The delay was
due to capital . restraints
• placed on Hydro which forced
it to delay thisproject' as well
, as others throughout the
province.Inflation • has
drastically increased - -the
° price tag on ` the new
development. The estimated
cost of the . project is $3.26
billion as opposed to the $1.4
vb•illion' estimated cost of
Bruce GSA:
The --original estimate on
• Bruce. GSA -was $940 million', •
but that also had to -be -revised..
because of,inflation. •
13ruce GSB will be similar
but not exactly the same as
Bruce GSA. Like Bruce A, it
will have four. reactor units
that will. be .numberedfive
through eight. • These.
generators are expected to -
come on line in phases as are
Bruce -GSA has already had
the first of its units started
up. First power is expected.
from Unit 2 in early, Sep-
tember, Start up dates for the
other three units are: .Unit 1,
November'76, Unit 3, August
'77 and Unit 4, August '78.
Each nuclear generating
station will be capable oi'o
producing 3000 megawatts of
electricity; or' • enough to
service .• a city ; the size of
Toronto'today.
The tWo heavy water plants
now under' construction,,will
be completed., but Bruce,
'Heavy . Water Plant :C was
cancelled because of the.
same..austerity program that
delayed the start of Bruce
.NGS B. The cancelling of this
plant was done at aloss of $69
million
• Bruce HWP B is expected
to be completed in 1978, while
the. finish of Bruce HWP D
was delayed' .two: years
bringing work on that project
to a virtual stand -still. It -will'
be completed by 1980. -
