""If happiness is winning... then losing is .-.,
`the pits'!! Hi, .soccer flans! We lost not
ones -but- two -games -last-weekend and a
sadder, sorrier sight you've ,never seen!
Just as well .you had. better things to do
and couldn't make it, 'cause it would
havebeen wasted time and gasoline.
Would I kid you, pals?
The Goderich' United 'A'. team lost to
Oakridge 'A', 5-3. We certainlystarted
out with a fantastic bang.., `Big Harry-
0' snapped in the initial goal of the game
' within 30 .seconds of the first minute of
-play! Itwas•a classic! So, I figured this
was gonna be our game '(foolish

• no -score orrakridge's part) After all;
when United comes on strong in the first
half, We're usually full of pep and pitter-
patter;
Unfortunately, 'it . was an • error .-in—
judgement on my part .and steadily
throughout the entire proceedings,
Goderichlizzled .out and the .'pep" was
replaced :by '•pooped'. and the 'patter'
'pittered' out!: It was useless. for. United
to attempt anything because Oakridge
anticipated -each ..and every move that.
we made' even before. United was aware
of'their own motion! •• • -
Oakridge was competent Mind you, .
but not as terrific and overpowering as—
United can be and should have been. The
opposition simply, got it together. and

A Mere handful . of. our men' -were
-totally ..supportive and supplied the
action 'a`dr d defensive:maneuvers it takes
an entire team to produce. But four trier. -

we only had eleven men and no alter- .

f'or'•each other, brother! • If you.take on
the chore you: do it with a good"heart and

The'fans were super -supportive... they
roared and ranted; they pleaded and,
prayed! But all of this. voodoo fell on deaf •
ears! .. `•
• The first half w• as an exercise in
futility It was a constant grind to•even..:
get to the ball,•let alone Control it and
•then, do something with It. .Harold
•Reffl.i.nghaus,.. Mike Tafeit, . Howie
Gottschalk and who else but Dave Graf, -
kept the United front , from .sinking -
••totally under`an the mire of •cenfiusiorx,; p•
They planned and plotted as they' kept
their feetflying! TheyWereeverywhere, .
doing a 'fantabul, ous' job. This half
ended in a 3-1 score for -Oakridge and
though that in itself, wasn't dishear- ..
tening (we've brought ourselves from
-behind `withscores worse than this !) • it
was definitely disheartening to see .:
'Oakridge- so ':with it''• and• Goderich so
"out ad, !
With the final 45 minutes,•the situation
becanre tense and touchy: Tempers were
frayed and energy was zilch! Oakridge
was intent on their objective 'and with
the ball literally and figuratively theirs,
they •stepped in once agar' to score goal. number- four. One of our newest mein=
bers, Tony Mennen• filled the breach.'..
somewhat with an answering goal for
Goderich: . •. , '..
When the diffnce in goals is two,
'you hope like'crazy that you can make it:
.,,up and at least tie the game: But the
second half was dwindlin"g away:and the
only_ action came from Oakridge once
_ ....._ _more-. as -they were aWarded:,adaenalty
kick and totalledr.up a score: of five
points. Vague efforts were'made by our
side to :,,approach the oppositions
territory but our half-hearted challenges
were met with stiff resistance.
am scares

cause. Team 'strength wits

Finally, in .total desperation, Harold
again made a super atteinpt to invade
the 'Oakridge -,=goal zone and he came

The game continued to its ultimate
'conclusion.... with much frustration,
exasperation and.. perspiration! ! - (and
that, was only the fans! I): So., people' -we
blew it! Mind you, wedidn't give it away
but we sho'nuff let it slip away!: United's
got all the angles, all the savvy and all
the talent to produce first-rate soccer.
I
don't want anyone (United above all)' . .,
• to• misinterpret What I'm saying becatise
I'rn_ a "dyed-in-the-wool .true-blue
United fanatic all the way, but it puzzles
• . me when they don't struggle to live up to
their potential. They' owe 4t to the game
of soccer, to the fansand above all, they
. .owe it to themselves. They have so Much
to give in. terms of :the. -sport and the
entertainment it'produces; so why are
they doggin'. it! ? They've- got the love
and support of everyone connected with
our club, so' it's not lack ofinterest in
that area. 'I can only surmise that their •
interest in. themselves has 'taken a cab'
somewhere!! • • : k'
Come On fella,-, let's get, back to the
basics, thereason we joined the soccer

Ditto for the 'B' team who couldn't
even show enough interest to -make up an •

nine men until`Ron Brown was' injured.
Then the eight remaining didn't stand a
chance of preventing.Delhi from winning

I've: called the award the "Hang -in and

it's a team effort and there ,are eleven
. men on .the field::, but when there's..
eleven bodies on the' field and only four
have soul and.stamina, then in my books
they're constituting the team. . and that
deserves •a resounding accolade! .So,
thanks .fellas., for your loyalty and :
devotion. We are appreciative. -
, Next Sunday are two `home' games at
