people just aren't. in the mood for
business. It -could be that the :arena
roof simply isn't...a-.erious concern to. .
the majority of 'individuals in:
Goderich.` It could be :that outright.
donations are a pipe -.dream of a'few
-idealists, and that.. most pe ple•;are
waiting for, a fund: raisin in
which•theycan get involved. There's
also. a real possibility that, people-
hesitate..to makea donation, . ex-
pecting'that a hefty ,slice .of their tax

complete the project.. at the'•arena.
Whatever 'the"reason,' Goderich
citizens haven't been responding: to
the appeal for funds as generously or ,
as positively as the committee 'had
originally hoped. It is a disap=

divicpals. A sad sort of commentary
of the priorities- of people, isn't it?
What's•more, :some people have
_been usifg•excuses for not turning in
their .gifts. to 'thearena. fund. Some .
' .have claimed they were ' missed ' in
the door-to-door, canvass. Others
argue they don't know whereto take.
. their donation - or where to send
their cheque. A few have . even
suggested that. the volunteer can-
vassers. did a poor job, One Aman
informed' the Signal --Star • that
because the newspaper did riot tell.
him to whom a cheque should be
made .out, and where 'it should be
sent, he has lost interest in the arena
funding raising drive.
It all boils: down -to a mighty poor
.show in Goderich. With thel former '.
arena roof -nearly re .moved and the.
committee nearing the point where
tenders will be called, it is time this
townput its shoulder to the wheel in
one . mighty . heave to push the
campaign over the •top. This com-
munity needs a safe and functional
arena for folks, of -ell -ages and in
terests. If isn't out of reach.. It is an
attainable goal when .-people get ,

Dear Readers in this issue talks r
- briefly- about Taiwan and the
tremendous improvement in -the
merchandise .coming out of that
country into Canada. In a recent
issue of The Financial Post; some`•
figures were reported which' 'attest,
to the phenomenal -success story in
Taiwan where the 'gross , national
product went from $.1,3 billion in 1952.
to more than $14 million in 1975-

ned, the per, capita income of the -
