Road age tting busier'
• all the- time
Twelve residents. of Sun -
coast Drive in..Goderich have
petitioned Town Council to
"proceed without delay the
curbing and paving of Sun=
coast Drive."
Although the ratepayers ,
front that part of town
recognfie. the "f.unding.
restraints", faced by •council,
they feel ' that since the
project wag planned for .1975
and later, . rescheduled for
1976. it should go ahead this
year.
DavidSmith of 40 Suncoast
D. ive, acted as spokeman for
the group. He 'reminded.
council that Suncoast Drive is
"becoming a collector road"
and that "trafficis in-
creasingly' heavy" ' on that
road.• '.• •
"Conditions towards, . the
Gibbons Street area are
absolutely deplorable," Mr..
•Smith told' council. Same

agreed with Mr. Smith on
this.

Newbus. helped save injuries
On May 4, a school bus went
off the road near 'Exeter,
sending 30 students and the
✓ driver, to hospital. Only three
were injured seriously.
What is interesting, is the
fact that.• this particular
school bus was a fairly new
one, according to Bob Cun-
ningham,,,, transpdrtation
manager for the board of
• education. This bus had the
padded rails and seat, backs
as recommended by .the
• Canadian . Standards
Association. • •
Unfortunately,; according
to Mr: Cunningham. these
padded seats and .rails- have
only been 'standard on buses
purchased in the last three br
'four years.
"The children find where
the padding has been. joined
' and proceed to pick at int and
pry it off," says' Mr. 'Cun-
up to ..the principal for
disciplinary. action." . says ,•
Mr. Cunningham. '
-Mr. Cunningham: says the
.board teas 'conside.red• in-
stal1ing seat belts in buses but
it just isn't practical.
"I don't know how we could
manage to ensure 72 students
all had their belts on and were.
not using the hard end as a
"lethal weapon".
M,r. Cunningham feels that
otherthan installing an adult
monitor on. ' every bus in
charge of discipline, there is.
little more the board can do at
present.
" This is not a good time to
bring up the idea of monitors
on buses, .unfortunately, due'
to the money .restraints now
in effect, It vould, resu.it in a
sizeable amount .of wages
.being added to the budget,"
says Mr. Cunningham.

and have received good co-

• No one seems able- to come
up with 'a solution, to the.
overall problem of safety on
school buses. However,
somebody is going to have to
deal with the situation. As
Mrs. James Pfaff, whose
daughter -was in the bus at the
time of last week's accident,
said, "Many of the children
had bumps on their heads. If
it had been steel instead of,
padding, it'would have been a

thoseemployed by, con-

by the board.
As far as discipline. goes.
Mr.' Cunningham' explains.
-The driver is a delegatelaf
of Suncoast Drive, and three
strips of sand 'pad. But,
Gower added,while the
projectis in the budget, the
.budget. meetings this week
will determine whether or not
the work will actually be
undertaken this year.
Councillor Gower claimed
the . t¢wn is "passing the
:buck" " if it fails to •'make `
immediate plans 'for •im
provE meats'• .to • Suncoast
Drive. He says it costs about
$15,000 per -annum to main-.

state.
Councillor Elsa Haydon
had reminded council . that
until the south side Of: Stiff:-
coast
un:coast is developed, it is dif-
ficulttb' begin the paving
project. Gower said he
believes the subdivision plans
will be eo'mpleted ar. ' ready
for development within one to
one-and-a=half months.
Paving would not be carried
out until late in the summer,
after all services .are across
the street. • '
'Reeve Stan Profit was 1
on hand Monday evening to
give 'his •.opinion about
adopting Section 27(a). of the
Municipal'.Act"at the county
level,, thereby reducing the
nurrib'er of representatives on
county council.
"If they save only one dime

claimed Reeve Profit.

Adequate drainage and

for the plants. He says:that
the two extre>es, heavy and
light soil's, present some
ch.4llenges to gardeners.
For example, if heavy,clay
land is cultivated and
it's •
wet, it puddles and dries out
later into hard lumps. Heavy
soils are easier to work with
and more useful for plant,
growth when plenty of peat
moss, coarse sand . and
manure are added tothen•t.

Mr. Gorniiie' recommends
that surplus vegetable lef-
tovers, grass . clippings or
plant residues be dug into the
soil. An even better approach
is. to add them to a'rcnrnpost

then dig ttiem into the soil._
