My wife and I have been considering the purchase of a
swimming pool and lately have been shopping around: Now we
get a call from a friendly salesman who informs us that ours is
an "ideal residential site" for a model pool, and df-we,consent to
this pool being set up on our property we are supposed -to save -
$2,000 on its- purchase price.
Is. this a valid offer or just a "come on?"
We understand from the Ontario Swimming Pool Association
that companies who advertise in this manner are NOT members '-
of the association and possibly.do•noeadhere to the code •of ethics
as established by that. association. '
We have also learned that salespeople employed by such
Companies often do have up to $2,000 to "play with" ...meaning
that identical pools' could be sold for. what looks like a $2,000
,price difference, in other words mine could cost $3,000 and yours.
' $5,000 (or vice versa) for the same pool.
Our.advice is to BEWARE, and we suggest'. that--y-ou:.riPal with

A few months ago I ordered a sabre saw from a mail order
house which was to be sent on approval.
If i decided to keep the 'saw after a 10 day trial period, I' was to.
send them a money order. Well I found their saw' to be most
satisfactory and mailed them the money order as requested.
Now part of their offer—was-supposed to include a 17 -piece
screwdriver set, to be sent, me FREE if 'I decided to keep the

personally think that this is a classic case of false ad-
vertising. What do you think?
. "IMPACT" contacted this firm on behalf of our 'reader and
were informed that the success of this advertising campaign
had been overwhelming, with the result that they have tem-
porarily run out of stock of screwdriver sets: More have -been
ordered however, and we have been assured that our reader will
receive his set within the ''very near future."

"Impact" has received a frantic letter (very lengthy)" from a
young lady who bought, her first car, (1973 European model) two
months ago,
While driving near Bradford a red warning 'light indicated
that "something was wrong". The first garage mechanic who
was also the owner, told her that she. needed a new alternator,
and that he 'could obtain and install: same. for 5140. When he'
learned that she didn't have this kind of money he then offered to
-get one at a•wreckers "much cheaper". ' .
She decided to try some place else Where they -claimed the
brouble was "brushes".
She authorized this job to be done but had to' spend two nights
in a •tnb?el• before they finally arrived• and were, installed at a
total cost of 515,26. • '
Heading, at last, totter home, she then discoverPd that every
time she touched the'brake the motor 'cut, out! Three 'service
stations between there andOrangeville, Feiused to even look at
it, too busy! Eventually the one that did diagnosed the new
trouble as "Points", ruined he •said, because the person .who,
installed the "Brushes" had•done so with the ignition left on!
Our reader wonders what, if anything, can be done about
crooked, (as she -calls them) or incorn.petert mechanics,'
While our sympathies are certainl.y,with•her, it would be
pretty hard toprove that any deliberate aot 'of fraud was ac-
tually performed in this case and like any "other trade or
profess"ion there are•unfortunately, many who profess to be what
they are not! ' •
