Last week the ladies of
WDQ, had a. taste of a
criminal's life.- • during• the
nineteenth 'century, as they
toured Goderielt's historie,.old
gaol.
For those .who have visited
the gaol ' before . it will be
worth their time again to"`go
through it this summer as itis
being restored to the original
state i't was in when the, jail
was built during,1839-1842.
In one of the cell blocks'the
walls have, been stripped Jo
show: the ,various sta$es of
constrtietion.: first the' walls
were built of thick wooden
beams, this was covered by a
•.solid- ..layer of stones to.
' prevent the prisoners from
digging, their way out, then a
layer of; hand split lath and
finally o' et this wa"s. a 'layer
of plaster. '
An old - chair was found
which is believed to be one of
the original , ones used and
from this - more are being
made and set up wit ytables
where the prisoners had their
meals. There . are many
changes goingon to restore
the jail to its original
structure and .it is to. be
finished inlylay for this year's
tours.::
The Governor's house is
also undergoing restoration -
and will be set up in period
furniture. All'the rooms are
receiving a ".fresh9coating of
paint and.paper. but even the
paper IS similar to :the pat;
