Goderich District Collegiate
Institute - • visited' , the
University of .• Waterloo on
Monday, April 5. In all 233
students : from Ontario high
schools were involved.
The students spent theday
learning about computers:
They attended lectures
during the morning and in the
afternoon • used one of thee•
multi-million. dollar . com-
puters on the UW : campus to
find their own solutions . to
problems: Those with suf-
ficient computer knowledge
were permitted to spend the
entire day . working with
coinputers. Consultants were
available to assist them.
Students were taught
FORTRAN, a computer
language. •Instruction in other
languages such 'as APL and
COBOL was available.
•
UW has been offering these
"computer science days"to
high schooLstudents for more
than 11 years. ; Last. year
almost 9,000 from 232 Ontario'
schools visited the campus.
UW feels ,it is important to
inform, young people about,
computers . since in-
creasingly, society is. looking
to the computing profession -
to solve its information
processing problems., •
• -Waterloo also permits high
school • students who have.
completed , grade 12
Mathematics and who have a
working knowledge of
FORTRAN to enrol in one of
its• : courses (carrying one-half
