HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal Star, 1976-04-01, Page 31YM 'V. MMM ENS More and more women are getting involved in . the • financial complexities of, running a home• today. They are- dealing' with mortgages, insurances and many other • financial aspects:.and Many widows are forced -to- deal with these things for .the :first tune. Be:ca:use-. -an i-nsurance policy is a legal document, its • language ,is .sometimes hard ,to understand so last• nesday Don • MacEwan of Goderich, joined the ladies of WDO to help clarify just what is involved in household in- .„ surance: Don said he uses what is . called the KISS system Keep' It .,Simple : Stupid: -.._. There are six categories on a policy. The first one is on the home itself. .Before get- ting a. mortgage on your home, most mortgage companies require that_,you get your itlousehdld iifisurance first. If • a home costs ' you $40,000:00, (remember land won'.t burn) deduct the price of the lot front the total to find out how muchinsurance you should have. • With inflation the way it is today you should readjust your policy -each year. Older hotnes •are moredifficult to put a value on because there is no way they . could be 'rebuilt if completely' destroyed by fire. It would cost a small fortune at today's prices for lumber and' Next is coverage on•'out- • buildings such as sheds,, carports, .garages .etc. This also covers the metal -sheds . many people are buying today. The amount of- ,. coverage. for these can 'Vary but it cannot be removed from the policy. J T1 th:i•r coverage .is for household . and personal •ef . fects located' within the home.. This coverage 'usually nuns about 40 to 50 percent of. the ittotal for contents which woul.d. be around $15,000.00. People often say they don't have •' anywhere near that amount of possessions' but when you start looking in the cupboards there is all yotir food;,drugs,' clothes, children'.s' possessions as well as all your furnishings. It all adds up. Added coverage can be ibtained'•for those who collect antiques, rare books, or coins ind many other •things of ,,ague. There is also coverage on i0use hold and' personal of-• ects temporarily removed rom the home. One example s -when 'your husband is at vork and has his coat or change: of clothes there and theplant'burns dawn, then his. personal possessions there are automatically covered , There has been,an increase in° thefts ''of ten speed bikes and tapes and tape' players in cars.'These would be covered 'under this 'section atso along with luggage and clothes, that - could •be. stolen • •while on a trip. If something happens concerning loss. or ,damage Co any of your pgssessions, check with your insurance .representative. _ The fifth coverage , is; .for.- additional living expenses.': This means if you are put out of„ your ' hom>e because of ,expl'os'ions, smoke or fire damage etc the company will pay for motel and food ex-. penses .while your .home .,is being made livable again, Last but not least is per- sonal liability coverage. This Covers .people other than family, .injured on your property such'asa child toeing hurt on your swing set or if the postman should slip and fall on an icy walk. This also .includesif your child should break a, neighbor's window with a stone or ball or if while golfing you should accidently hit someone causing injuries. These are just a .few. examples and again you should check with your representative. Don said this' category covers' three, types of „people ' trespassers, in- vited people and service men. final s 4.z - nr .l i .ICH.SXGTA *STA `;,, T'HU. u The Goderich Area Holusing signed forms prepared by the Action committee is in the - housing action committee final stages of a campaign in the community to determine" if there ' is .a need here for government subsidized senior citizen housing and to show that need to the Ontario Housing Corporation: and when the forms were sent:; to OHC, they were deemed inappropriate by the government agency and the,, committee: told the applicants would have to ut regulationOHC f$rens., Thecommittee, organized` . •,aThe new forms created a-- their efforts to 'secure ap- problem, -fpr the committee•. ,plications from seniors for n&einbers 'who had' to re. the housing • at their last contact the applicants asking Meeting and began a personal that• they' fill out, the-,9HC .aper"oach method to: ensure forms and advising there that that .all potential candidates 4' the form carried no demand for• the` housing are reached that they move into the senior. a licati s' are before allthepp_ on a e .. ,cit zerl • hdusing .if ..such .units.- collected and sent to OHC. - were constructed:, ~" ' • .
