THE POTATO CROP The potato is one of our most im- portant food crops, and yet it is one that very often does not receive the attention it should. It is the prac- tice of many farmers to leave the planting of potatoes until practically all other crops are in. With the ex- ception of, perhaps, some parts of the Maratime Provinces this late planting means a much smaller yield than there would be if the planting were done before the mid- dle or by the middle of May. By the end of May or beginning of June. the seed potatoes have sprouted so much that when these are broken off at planting time the new shoots will not come on with the sane vig- or as they did early in the season. Furthermore it is important for the. potato to get a good root system before the hot weather sets in.
