Adventism Invests
Advertising is an xe.{Yl.Xt an in vpe7stment7—ennt

as such, Because it has been the hab-
it of some merchants to look upon it
as an expense, a wrong view has
been gained. Perhaps the misconcep-
tion arose from the fact that in
bookkeeping it has been the habit to
charge advertising to expense. Ad-
vertising produces new business—it
swells the volume of business and
profit therefore it is an investment.
Only the man 'vho looks upon adver-
tising as an expense, who is afraid
of it, prejudiced against it, lose
money in advertising. The man who
treats advertising as an investment
and gives it the attention an invest-
ment requires—knows that every
dollar rightly invested in this dir-
ection yields compound Interest—
and more.

Oyster -shell .Scale.
This is a very common orchard
insect. It attacks not only apples but
also pears, plums, currants and many
ornamental and shade trees and
bushes. Full grown scales are found
almost exclusively on the bark and
are easily recognized by their oyster-
shell appearance. They are about %
of an inch long, 1-24 inch wide, taper
towards one end and in dolor resem-
ble closely the bark.
The injury is caused by their suck-
ing the juices out of the bark and
thus weakening the trees. When very
abundant they almost completely
cover the bark and in that ease may
kill either the whole tree or portions
of the branches. Most infested trees,
however, are not killed but only
weakened.
Control.—Spraying the trees just
before or just after the buds burst
with lime -sulphur solution, 1 gallon
to 8 or 9 gallons of water, is a satis-
factory remedy. The regular Codling
Moth spray with one gallon of lime -
sulphur to about 39 gallons of water,
to which two pounds of arsenate of
lead' paste or one pound arsenate of
lead powder is added will also help
greatly, because it will hit the young
scale insects just after they have
hatched, while they are still unpro-
tected and easily destroyed. Dead
scales may remain on the trees for
several years after date of killing.
Pruning the trees early makes it eas-
ier and cheaper to spray them well.
—Prof. L. Caesar, 0. A.. College,
Guelph.
Planting the Cultivated Crops,
To ensure good crops of carrots,
mangles, sugar•beets, potatoes and
corn., the land should be well prepar-
ed and seed should be secured of the
highest quality. Under average cone
dations the Irish Cobbler variety
(early potatoes) and the Green Moun-
tain (late potatoes) are recommend-
ed for Ontario. To secure best re -
bolts with the potato crop, it is al:*
ways better to plant them not later
then the 15tH of May. This year plant
half your Seed ten days earlier than
you, have been accustomed to doing,
end plant the other half at the usual
IlIne.. The experineent will prove to
yati satisfaction the value of! early
;slanting. if the potato planter and
