PartieuiarlY interesting is a reecord. showing ''the erratic ei1ects in the growth of a plant caused by .alcohol. Sir Jagadis states that there is noth- ing in the animal world that has not been forestalled by the plant. "There is a pulsation iu certain plant-tissuee which with animals is the hoar t -beat," he declares, "Identical effects are caused by stimulants and poisons in animals and vegetables." With reference to the difficulty, in. recording these "incessant throb- bings" in the apparently perfectly still plant, he states that the sluggish movement of a snail is about 6,00.0 times faster than the movement of growth in a plant, the average rate of which is one -millionth part of an inch per second., The growth of a plant can, with the use of this microscope, be made subservient to the will of the grower. By experimenting in this direction in regard to agriculture discoveries of vast importance are likely to be made. Sir Jagaclis claims that there is no need, if his microscope is used. to wait a whole season as at present to witness the result of experiments, Giant Star -Spotter. The largest telescope in the world has just been built at the Mount Wil- son Observatory in California, at a point nearly 6,000 feet above sea - level. • It is a quarter of a million times More powerful than the human eye, and will enable astronomers to see a thousand million new stars. They hope, with its help, to find out the limits of the universe. This'telencope is a permanent one for solar research. It is fixed in a tower 164 feet high,. and has au outer, tower as a protection against wind vibration. The tube of the telescope has triple walls with air spaces betweeu to pre- vent heating. The reelecting mirror and the second mirror in the dome are sitvered on the front surface, and are o;ee foot thick. ,•There are three lenses. The largest, at the top, is a 12 in. objective of 150 ft. focal length, giving a sun image ueariy 17 in. in diameter. Canada produces 90 per cent. of the lobster supply of the world, and in addition, .tete finest lobsters, The lobsters of the New England coast are the little brothers of the noble crustaceans native to the more north- ern and colder waters of Labrador, and, indeed, Canadian female lobsters are selected for use in American hatcheries to improve the strain. The Labrador coast has the greatest known supply, but is too distant to be available for commercial purposes at Mount Royal. present. The main supply now comes from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, par- tiealarly around the famous Island of Anticosti, and from the waters about Nova Scotia. Nova _Scotia is famous for romance, Chateau de. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills do one thing and do it well. They build up the blood, increasing the number of red corpuscles. As this is clone the blood becomes a richer red and is able to carry more oxygen, the great sup- porter of human life. As the blood improves in quality the tissues of the body are better nourished and the functions of the body are better per- formed. The glands of the stomach are stimulated and the first sign of improvement is usually a better appe- tite and better digestion, Dr. Williams' Pink Pills have been used for years as a blood -making tomo and system builder with such good results that in every community there are many people who are recommend- ing this remedr'-to their friends and to others who are afflicted. Here is the statement of one per- son among thousands who have used Dr. Williams' Pink Pills to their own great advantage. Mrs. A. Veniot, Hemford, N.S., says:—"For about two years I was a great sufferer from in- digestion, which seemed to carry with it a complication of other troubles. There is not a great deal of informa- tion on the point, but it would seem that a plaice is a veteran at twenty. One of that age was recently caught in the North Sen. An identification disc was placed on it fn accordance. with the international scheme of inquiry into the migration, growth, and age et nine Then it Was released, but it ulti- mately ended its romantic career in the toi',s of a trawl net. Tile most famous of all fish, how- er, er, is "Pelorus Jack," a grampus which regularly piloted ships into Pelorus Sound, New Zealand, and ,was finally, after about thirty years' service:, protected by a special Act of Parliament in 1904. Never before has an individual fish attained such honor. There have been rumors of bis death. but from the latest accounts he seems to be still in existence. Not Strong Enough. Its roof shelter- ed not only the „governors-general, their suites of fair women and brave apples, cherries, and, last but not men and their illustrious guests, but least, lobsters. The government has fur traders, scouts, militia leaders, and Indians. 'In 1745 it passed into the hands of the Campagnie des Indes and as India House become the centre of a great fur trade, filling this picturesque and important role for nearly twenty years, In 1763, after the cession of Canada, it was again the residence et the governor, and invitations to recep- tions held there during the following century are still. in existence. "The- Chateau was headquarters for the tinny of the -Continentals Congress in its fruitless effort to hold Canada for the thirteen colonies. After Bene- dict Arnold failed in his treason he retired to Montreal and stayed there for a time. The lobsters are also guarded out of sea- son by strict protective laws. The Nova Sootia 1919 lobster sea- son has been very satisfactory, The total catch is given as 5,825,096 pounds, valued at $1,396,946. The catch was somewhat smaller than in 1918, when the quantity was 6,285,820 pounds, but a Bitch higher valuation. is put on the 1919 catch. The value of the 1918 catch was $799,397.
