ialist and on Tuesday of this week
she underwent an operation. A re-
port Tuesday evening stated she had.
come through the operation success-
fully and was resting nicely.

Martin, Exeter Oid Boy, wbo was
proniintentiy mentioned to wear the
mantle of Sir Wilfred Laurier.
Hon, William Melville Martin,who
notwithstanding pressure brought
to bear upon him, firmly refused to
permit his name to stand in the con-
test for leadership of the Liberal
party in Canada at the great nation-
al Liberal Convention held in Otta-
wa came from the capital to spend
the week -end with his parents, Rev.
W. M. and Mrs. Martin, Ridout St.,
south. leaving for the west on Mon-
day morning.
When he entered the immense
convention hall the first forenoon
and took. his place on the platform
with the other provincial premiers,
he was given a most flattering dem-
onstration, Probably no man in all

Toronto Exhibition starts on Sat-
urday
atnrday and will be formally opened
by the Prince of Wales on Monday.
Memorial service for the late Fred
Tucker will be held in Trivitt Mem-
orial church next Sunday evening.
The holidays are drawing to a
close. Some of the scholars are won-
dering how they have gone so fast.

Mr. Rd. Davis has moved into the
old homestead purchased from the
•estate of the late Jos. Davis. Mr.

idence vacated by Mr. Davis.
Mr. S. J. V. Cann recently pur-
chased the turning and cider factory
from Mr. A. Cottle and has taken
possession. Mr. Cann has been act-
ing as caretaker of the Exeter school
but is tendering his resignation.
The service in. Coven. church on.
Sabbath morning last was con-
ducted by Mr. Hy. Strang, Mr. F.
W. Gladman, assisting, Mr. Strang
preached an excellent sermon that
was greatly appreciated- by the con-
gregation.
The engine on the G.T.R. train
coming 'ap from London Monday
evening broke down near Clande-
boye and it was necessary to bring
op another engine from London,
eonsequentiy the train was 2 hours
late in arriving in town.
Union services were held by Main
street and James street congrega-
dons on Sabbath. last. Rev. Dr. Medd
oreaehed in James Street church in
the morning and James St church
in the evening. The same order will
be observed next Snndsy.
