An ge of Adventure.
Not so many years ago it was com-
monly said that the age of romance
and adventure was over, that in, its
place had comae an age of prosaic
routine. Whatever truth there was
in the statement, we are certainly in,
the midst of an age as adventurous
and as nobly romantic as the world
has ever seen.
Every deep emotion has been play-
ed upon in the cast "four years; every
lofty impulse has been roused. And
it has been demonstrated beyond all
doubt that the present generation is
equal to any that has gone before it
in planning and doing of heroic
deeds.'',

wasteful of time and trying to the

the stock when driven to an outside

rarely drink sufficient for their best
performance or development.
Water systems in each case pay their
way in dollars as well a5in conveni-

The question of cost is important,
Many improvements may be made,'
however, such as safeguarding
the well from pollution, install-
ing a hydraulic ram, septic tank,
gravity system, etc., which are not
very expensive and when the farmer
is able to do a good deal of, the work
himself the cost is reduced to a point
where thousands can afford the in
stalations.' With a practical work-
ing knowledge of the principles
of farm water supply, water
systems, equipage and sewage
disposal few, indeed, who have
impure well water and are without
household and stable' water conveni-

PHILADELPHIA, July 29. --- One
policeman was shot and killed, an-
other so badly injured that he prob-
ably will die, and sixty other persons
were injured, a score of them seri-
ously, yesterday in street fights be-
tween whites and negroes in the
southern section of the city. More
than fifty persons were placed under
arrest.
The trouble started over the kill-
ing of a white man by a negro short-
ly after midnight and the wounding
of two others. It continued inter-
mittently from 5 o'clock in the morn-
ing until 7 o'clock' last night,and
with the fighting going on in half a
dozen parts of the district the police
found it hard to cope with the
situation.
Peasants Return Home.
PARIS, July- 29.—French peasants
again are choking the roadways be-
low the iltarne east, of 'Chateau
Thierry. But this time they are go-
ing home instead of leaving, as was
the case in June, when the alarms
were sounded that the Germans were
coming.
Every road leading northward con-
tains streams of peasants and ve-
hicles of every description, with ef-
fects of all kinds piled on them, but
on the faces of..the people is a differ-
ent expression than that which they
bore when they were going the other
way. The expression this time is of
anticipation, but also of anxiety, as
they do not know what awaits them
at borne.

Attached to the gide of the furnace are
a lot of iron skewers. When a custom-

piece of meet, muttem or goat, the lat.,
ter being the most popular, cuts it with
a sharp imite into a long ribbon, winds
it around the skewer and plaees it
upon the charcoal fire. " Scene of the
drippings are collected and, vrith a lit-
tle salt and spice, make a pleasant
sauce for the kabob when it is done.
The Pepper Vine.
The pepper vine grows best in a
wooded valley where there is plenty of
moisture and abundant foliage to pro-
tect fit from the heat of tile sun.. It is
given a rude sort of cultivation. The
growers plant it, keeping the grass
from its roots, and when the tree near
which'. it is planted bas no lower
branches strings or peles are placed in
proper position to enable the vine to
climb the tree. It needs no further at-
tention
