In last week's Advocate a list of
of the 'contributions for Red :Gross
from different places in the. County
of ifuron and Hay Tp. is given; all of
them except the county grant. is
from 'towns and villages. The ques-
tion is asked what is Usborne and
other townships doing? Usborne iy
probably !living more closely to the
Divine direction. "When thou doest
thine alms, let not thy left hand
'know what thy right '.Land daeth."
than some other places. This year
Usborne has given $800.00 to Belgian
(Relief, $75.00 per month to the Iliad
Cross +societies of 'the Township and
gave each of the Usborne. boys that
have enlisted a $5.00 gold coin as ap-
preciation of their course and has
willing assented to her share of the
county grant which will be over
1200.00. Much more has been done by
personal 'contributors. Some of which
are credited to other places. Much
more could be done by a personal can
ivas. • but it is quite a task to reach
a population very little larger than
that of Exeter but scattered over en
area 'of 43,000 acres, instead of 1200
acres. We have good reason to balatv,'
that the municipalty grants voted by
any council will be propartiona1ly
funded by the 'county, but if it istnot
the towns and villages .considering
their population and the share of
county grant they pay and that they I
largely absorb the, weathy retired

The Red Cross work 'deserves all et

likely be a slacker.

This week we reprint a letter
written by Lance -Corp. B. H..Eiowey
of town written shortly after arriv-
ing in England, also a couple of let-
ters written by iaibce-Corp. W. W.
Lodge of Moncton. N. 03. a relative
of fair. and Mrs. Howey and others in
Exeter.
• We landed at Liverpool on the 24th
of July after an excellent voyage.
I We had only one evening of rain and
no storms in the whole journey.
M'y impressions - of England was
that it was very thickly populated
and that everybody here was enjoy-
ing that evening at any rate.
'We ;were cheered by boatload after
boatload of people and 'they were not
small boats either.
It seems that they had received
news that we had been sunk by a
German Submarine, but we did. not -
feel inclined to think of any such
thing.
Cheriton is only a very small place
one mile from Folkstone which is on
the English Channel, I think, 4t any
rate it is on the water, so that we can
have a pleasant tune bathing every
evening. , , t e
The houses vary so mu.a•h, in wise
and shape that I 'could not attempt
to describe these in a letter, but on
the whole they look very Pretty,,
especially those covered with ivy.
