Letter from England
Mee following very interesting let-
ter was received, by the writers :es-
ter, Mrs. T. 0. South'cett of town.
My Deareet Laura --
Where did I leave off, that last
awful dose I aent you? Some thirty
odd pages was'nt it? I promise not
to be so tiresome this time. May be
because its a raw gold windy rainy
day, not very conducive to Iengthy
correspondence.
From our own little viewpoint,
however, yesterday• and today have'
been momenitotte ones` in our history.
In a sense there is n'i 01st left, even
before we get to the front, while
we are eating our Sunday dinner (we
are quartered in 'long huts, about for-
ty men, to a but, and the ,rsleep and
eat there) the sergeant -major comes
in with "an important announcement1.
as ho called it.
Hoys, "ser he, he sez, ".titre':*
chance to lee shot in a hurry."
That made us stop feeding our fame
long enough to hear the finish. The
drift of his offer, was that 150 vol-
unteers were wanted from our 3rd
Co., and the same from .the other
three companies, making 650 men
from the 61st 'to go to Bramshott to
be ready to reinforce some battal
ions at the front. There's no telling
hew long before we get there, but it
appears to be on the way. We all
volunteered nearly, at least all oar
own bunch. Quite a few took the
chance to transfer to some other bat-
talion. None of the officers and.8ew
of the non -.commissioned officers
were • allowed to go. So this means
that 'practically all in the 61st ranks
are to hook .up with 44th or some oth-
er bunch, and lose our 01st name.
Most of the boys feel quite sorer at
the way we were broken up, and our
officers are feeling it more keenly
than we, for the boys are still pretty
well together, but the officers are
stranded without anything for them
to do, except try to •join some later
Canadian battalion. This is a slim

Let's see; we were at Bordon a

Close by, is the town of Folkstone,
quite a fashionable seaside resort.
In peace times it must be a great
centre. Even now, with cverythin
pretty dead, there is considerable
life around. 'There is a fine beach
where bathing is indulged in during
seasonable weather., We have had
some fine. real hot weather, when it
felt ase hot as our Canadian midsum-
mer, but the past. few clays• have ben

the scramble and diving up to • their•

'tbe shore are some of the most beau-
tiful walks, and an exceptionally
fine promenade along the brow of
the high cliff, a hundred feet or
more above the eea, and jtast over -
banging it:. We walked along the
cliff last night, bordered- with fine
grounds, hotels; and park benches
and chairs, and it was quite a•throng
strolling uee and down.
