Lions Club rates high in good deeds
When it comes to doing a lot of good deeds
in a community, the Lions Club have to get a
very high rating. The Goderich Club was
founded in 1922, therefore marking 65 years
of operation this year. Mel Bogie holds the
presidency this year and the club boasts a
membership of 93.
For a Lions Club to get started, it has to be
sponsored by another Lions Club, already in
operation. Lions run by districts; A9 consists
of 49 Clubs, from Goderich - South; Lion's
Head - North; Mono Mills, East. The Lions
Clubs are active in 158 countries.
The Goderich Club meet the second and
fourth week of each month.
The Lions International Conventions are
attended and enjoyed by many members. In
the last few years it has taken place in
Dallas, Texas; New Orleans, Louisiana;
and in 1987 it was held in Taipei, Taiwan. In
1988 the. convention will be held in Denver,
Colorado.
There is always a big parade at the Inter-
national° .Convention that lasts between

The Goderich Block Parents Association
has been operating for several years. At the
moment however, they are experiencing
some difficulties in getting people to take
the executive jobs. This is not a full time
position by any means. It does involve being
able to attend the meetings and taking the
minutes, etc.
While we are still very fortunate living in
Goderich, in knowing our children are
reasonably safe, it is still better to be
prepared, and have the children know there
are places for them to go if the need ever
arises.
There.: are about 80 Block Parents in
Goderich at present, and most parents are
pleased to know this organization is active
in town.
A Block Parent is not only for children
who are worried, about being picked up,
they are there for anyone who becomes
frightened or lost, and also for the elderly
who might become disoriented and lost
while out walking.
To become a Block Parent, one has Will
out an application, which is run through the
computer by the police to be sure the person
applying is a responsible citizen. When the
application is approved, the representative
in that area will deliver your Block Parent
sign.
Elizabeth MacPherson says one of the
main things to remember if you become a
Block Parent, is to remove the sign from
your window when you are away.
If you can give an hour or so of your time,
why not volunteer to help out; to attend the
meetings, and give this worthwhile
organization your support.

My family would like to extend belated
best wishes, health and happiness to a very
special couple; my parents, Phyllis and
Emerson Rodger of RR 2 Auburn, who
celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary
last week, Dec. 15.

To my readers, I wish you all a Very
Merry Christmas and health and happiness
in the coming year.
AIDS speakers
now available
Community or school groups across un-
tario who want to learn more about AIDS
(acquired immune deficiency syndrome)
can now contact the Ontario Public Educa-
tion Panel on AIDS (OPEPA) for a
volunteer speaker to address them, Dr. J. A.
Browne, OPEPA chairman, has announced.
The telephone number to call from outside
Toronto is 1-800-387-5586 (toll free).
The Speakers' Referral Service provides
resource information and audio-visual
materials on AIDS, in addition to speakers.
It requests that groups identify the type of
audience which will be addressed, and
aspects of AIDS which would be of the most
interest.
Date and place of presentation should be
given, along with any other information
which would help the service refer the most
appropriate speaker.
Health Minister Murray Elston announc-
ed last September the ministry would pro-
vide up to $300,000 to establish OPEPA, with
the aim of supporting and counselling peo-
ple with AIbS. Of the total amount, $200,000
was set aside for the panel to promote infor-
mation and education for public and high-
risk groups.
