Caplan asks committee to reassess dental needs Health 11uster Elinor Caplan has re- quested the Advisory Committee on Dental Care to reconvene and assess the dental care needs of Ontario residents over the age of 65. "Many elderly Ontario residents are financially unable to receive necessary den- tal treatment," Ms. Caplan said. "This study should provide the necessary research to help us develop an effective, ac- cessible dental care program for those in need." The advisory committee will use the following terms of reference: • To review and assess available informa- tion on dental status of Ontario residents ag- ed 65 and older, and assess the availability, accessibility and adequacy of current pro- grams in meeting these needs. • To get goals for the restoration and maintenance of dental health for this age group, and identify priority target groups where assistance is most needed and most effective. • To define essential basic dental care (preventive and curative) services and pre- sent options for possible delivery mechanisms that could be used to provide. services to the target groups identified. Dr. T.W. Hicks, director of dental services for Simcoe County and Muskoka -Parry Sound Health Units, is advisory committee chairman. The committee / Q talready has represen- tatives from the ario Dental Association, Ontario Society of Public Health Dentists, the two faculties of dentistry and the Ministry of Health.
