Welcome move
Although it is less than what is needed to
address the true financial hurt felt by
Canada's farmers, the $2.8 billion financial
package announced yesterday by the
federal government is a welcome move. It
acknowledges the grave importance of
agriculture to this country, said Brigid'
Pyke, president of the Ontario Federation
of Agriculture.
Ontario's grain and oilseed farmers will
directly benefit from the $1.1 billion defi-
ciency payment but what is equally en-
couraging is the federal announcement of
reform of the Farm Credit Corporation,
said Pyke.
Just last week, the OFA asked premier
David Peterson and the Provincial Cabinet
to look into buying out the FCC's Ontario
operations and loan portfolio because the
Province's farmers needed a stable source
of farm credit to survive. Neither the FCC
nor the chartered banks were fulfilling
that role, the OFA bad told Cabinet.
"However, yesterday's announcement
shows us that there may finally be solid
steps being taken to strengthen the Farm
Credit Corporation," said Pyke, "and the
Ontario Federation of Agriculture looks
forward to consulting with Government on
ways to make it a strong, viable source of
agricultural credit".
For many farmers whose debt loads
have become unmanageable due to low
commodity prices and the resulting bad
farm cash flow, the federal debt review
boards have been a great help and it is
god to see Ottawa recognize that the need
is still there not only to continue the debt
review process but even to strengthen it.
Pyke also welcomed the federal an-
nouncement of increased funding for
agricultural research, soil conservation,
and farm management training.
WI meeting
The Tiger Dunlop Women's Institute
held their Christmas meeting in the
Township Hall, on Dec.10.
A bountiful "Pot luck" luncheon preced-
ed'the meeting.
1st Vice President Helen Stoll presided
at the meeting, in the absence of Stella
Reaburn.
The roll call, "A Christmas decoration
idea," was most interesting. Many lovely
homemade decorations were passed
around to look over, and rnany other
decoration ideas were discussed.
Ks The Secretary -treasurer, Marie
Buchanan, read the minutes of the last
meeting, and also gave the treasurer's
report.
Many thank you notes were received,
from recipients of previous donations.
In the spirit of sharing, the members
brought; canned goods, fresh vegetables
and fruits, candies, etc., enough to fill four
decorated baskets.
The members bought tickets on the
baskets, and draws were made. The pro-
ceeds of these draws will go for charitable
donations.
Lucky winners were: Teresa Fulford,
Anfi Montgomery, Mary Clairmont, and
Ella Bogie.
Maitclie McBride, as she has done for
many years, brought her usual full jar of
pennies: Many thanks to Maudie for her
generosity.
With Helen Stoll at the piano, all shared
in the singing of Christmas songs.
